Re:Acemoglu, Johnson and Robinson Win Nobel Prize on Monday October 14, 2024 @12:59PM (#41839419)
The prize is the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

It was not one of the prizes established by Nobel in his will. This prize was created in 1968.

It is not a Nobel Prize. It is wrong and misleading to call it a "Nobel Prize".

I have no relationship with my car radio right now.

I don’t want a relationship with my car radio.

I can’t remember the last time I turned on my car radio.

I don’t expect this to change in the future.

Oh, wow! Another “Classical Stuff…” fan! Excellent!
Not so much the past few weeks, but I was getting a lot of them before the Texas primary. And I expect it to pick up again as we get closer to the US elections.

My tactic is similar to that of a poster below. I respond back with “ I don't vote for candidates who text spam me. Die in a fire.” and block the number.

What is a Huberman and where is this alleged “hit piece”?

Seriously, I have no idea what y’all are talking about.

Your mileage may vary.

Has anyone else ever read Joe Haldeman’s “To Howard Hughes: A Modest Proposal”?

I’d recommend trying to find a copy if you haven’t.

Douglas Southall Freeman, On Leadership, especially the lecture he called “Old Number One”.

I can’t find it online now, though the whole book is on archive.org. Here’s a good summary:

Re:The Nobel Prizes Need a Makeover on Friday September 29, 2023 @08:16PM (#37711665)
Can we start by getting rid of the “Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel”, which is not a Nobel Prize, but is commonly and misleadingly referred to as one?
Re:Ask HN: What's your favorite essay/blog post of all time? on Saturday August 19, 2023 @03:47PM (#37192404)

All meats. Real meats, none of that fake plant-based meat.

Some roasted garlic would be nice too.

Because, as everyone knows…

…cheetahs never win.

This is a really fun, and atypical, science fiction story.
I believe Cormac McCarthy did as well, at least until his recent death.
Texas has had a “Safe Surrender” law since 1999, which allows people to surrender babies to first responders without penalty.

Texas also recently legalized “baby boxes” which allow for anonymous surrender: the law takes effect in September.

I’m reminded of that panel from “Spider-Man”:

“But I don’t WANT to cure cancer. I want to turn people into dinosaurs.”

Yes, it’s bigamy.

It’s big of you, too.

It’s big of all of us.
