Cerium

Do you also wait until the inside of the meat is the temperature you want before taking it off the grill, then are later surprised when it is overcooked?
Add some enzymes to help reduce the remaining cellulose?
I felt this on my last truck shipment. My previous LTL provider suddenly closed and the next cheapest option is more than twice as expensive.
Re:Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood? on Friday September 11, 2026 @09:15AM (#49657893)
Unfortunately, no. People talk about the times. I was sick and tired of covid posts a few years ago. Or nodejs before that.
Re:Aphantasia Beginner's Guide on Thursday August 27, 2026 @10:34PM (#49473701)
Visualizing for me has always been like touching something with my eyes closed. I can't "see" the object, but I have a feeling for all the shapes and contours. You can feel which way a key is in your hand and where each ridge is without having to see it. I solve geometry problems the same way. I can't see the whole thing at once, but I can move my sense of feeling across arbitrary scenes.

I'm a fan of the t-rex:

> given choice between complexity or one on one against t-rex, grug take t-rex: at least grug see t-rex

That section reminds me of The Litany Against Fear.

Re:The Sylvester–Gallai Theorem on Friday August 07, 2026 @12:24AM (#49205883)
The other thread above helped me. You can have as many collinear points as you want as long as at least one point in the set is non-collinear.

Consider a 3x3 grid. It satisfies this argument.

I learned the pig pen cipher from a library book in maybe 4th grade. My friends had fun with if off and on through high school.
Re:How the Atmos clock functions on Sunday July 26, 2026 @11:27PM (#49064883)
My guess: it is a relatively safe compound with the right properties to act as a working fluid for this movement. The text linked below mentions the working fluid and the property that the vapor pressure is highly variable over the range of normal room temperatures.

Here is a document with details and history about these clocks: https://www.physics.rutgers.edu/~matilsky/documents/Atmos/At...

What is a spec but a collection of decisions?
Camping gear, hammocks, bags, any small change or repair. Strap breaks on a backpack, fix it. Pocket rips, fix it.
The fact that it arrives cold and soggy is now an evolutionary pressure on our cuisine.

You can grow them yourself. I had no effort producing more than I can use in only a few years time.
Re:How fast is N tokens per second really? on Wednesday May 20, 2026 @02:43PM (#48212168)
Why is that? It seems the other direction? I want to be sure I can complete a task in a certain amount of wall clock time. If the tokens per second are slow, then I am risking more by running a single approach at a time, and then have an incentive to try to multiplex my attention between separate work-streams. If the generation is fast enough to occupy my attention then there is no more available improvement by having parallel threads.
Re:AI is wiping out entry-level jobs on Friday May 15, 2026 @10:15AM (#48148901)
The main focus of education as a taxpayer supported activity is about the perpetuation of the state. The fact that a healthy state relies on a healthy economy is a constraint that helps shape the aims of public education. Other constraints are about culture, values, and understanding the government to the degree that the government can count on having a future generation of legislature.

One of my favorites on this topic, the 1963 "A Talk to Teachers", by James Baldwin.

Some perspective: I feel that I participate here, yet most days I don't write even a single comment. When I comment I rarely write more than two comments a day.
Agreed - my experience mirrors this.

> "Fix the following compile errors" -> one shot try and stops.

> "Fix the following compile errors. When done, test your work and continue iterating until build passes without error" -> same cost but it gets the job done.

Re:Having Kids (2019) on Friday March 20, 2026 @11:37AM (#47456135)
A good friend of mine holds the belief that "having friends with kids is better than having kids of your own", and I definitely feel the "can't explain" part - there is an unexplainable reality when you have kids of your own.

Now that reserved seats are the norm, I leave my house at the specified starting time and never have missed even a minute of the feature film.
When you have a hammer as big as an LLM a lot of problems start to look like nails.

The second image in the article clearly shows screw holes in the letters. The H appears to be perfectly symmetric for 180 degree mounting.
Re:I baked a pie every day for a year and it changed my life on Thursday February 26, 2026 @01:55PM (#47170397)
Do it! Making a pie might seem unapproachable, but it will all work out. I have never failed to make a pie that brought some happiness into the world.

I don't see the lock in effect (such as learning a language, or a complex software product) with LLMs yet that would drive student based marketing efforts.
It is not really cheap, nor best "value for the dollar", but I am extremely satisfied with UniFi [0]. Nearly instant setup, decent mobile apps, web interface, basically just works as you need.

If you wanted to pay for direct air capture of CO2 to directly "undo" your climate effect of driving, the cost would currently be about $6 per gallon. Price comes from [1], found [2] looking for a second opinion on current direct air capture cost.

Re:The Hidden Engineering of Runways on Monday January 26, 2026 @10:19PM (#46775103)
I interpreted the effect here not to be on the deck plates but to be the point of impact between the cable and the hook. Sudden bends in cables can wear them fairly quickly in the immediate vicinity. I'm sure you can extend cable life proportionally to the spread of the loading.
Re:Ask HN: What do you consider fun? on Thursday December 25, 2025 @04:32PM (#46387173)
Hand tool woodworking. Zero screens needed. All you need is about a 8x8 foot space that you can get messy.
Re:Toys with the highest play-time and lowest clean-up-time on Thursday December 25, 2025 @01:52PM (#46386289)
There is also Quadro Toys. I have a couple of the large sets and have built a series of houses, climbing toys, and now a "castle" with a slide for my daughter.
Re:RAM is so expensive, Samsung won't even sell it to Samsung on Thursday December 04, 2025 @09:52AM (#46148285)
Don't worry, if you are happy with those specs you can get corporate ewaste dell towers on ebay for low prices. "Dell precision tower", I just saw a listing for 32gb ram, Xeon 3.6ghz for about 300 usd.

Personally, at work I use the latest hardware at home I use ewaste.

Keep your eyes open for a better job? The work you do should have impact of some kind. In the corporate world there is business impact (increase revenue, decrease direct costs or improve system efficiency), social impact (make a product that directly helps people in some way), or personal impact (work on something that you find intrinsically interesting or helps you grow your skills or understanding).

I don't see any reason to permanently stay in a role filled with mundane triviality .
