News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Not a huge surprise given the absolute face ripping jump MRNA had when the vaccine was first announced. The ~$20B company jumped 174% overnight, and then climbed another 70% over the last two months, now only dropping 18% on this news.

To illustrate how much they've gone up, this 18% drop is just slightly less than their entire market cap in June (four months ago)

Occam's razor would suggest that mods simply thought that it would generate insightful discussion, and manually pushed it up, something that dang regularly does and a core feature of HN -- and that is assuming it was pushed up in the first place.
For anyone else curious:

Re:I Quit OpenAI Because Its Culture Is Broken on Sunday October 04, 2026 @01:12AM (#49950845)
I'd argue he's the only one able to lead OpenAI, Anthropic already owns the piety narrative, so there is only space for one other "maximally ruthless" company.

Fortunately I store all my knowledge offline in my brain

Unfortunately its capacity is not very big

In China, I would see kids who must have been 7 years old running around the streets or on public transit without adult supervision.

It seems like a much healthier way to live than in constant fear.

I agree. I "revived" the comment by clicking on the timestamp ("33 minutes ago") and then clicking "vouch". I believe only users with a score of 200+ (points? karma?) can do so.
Re:Why some US restaurants are banning tips on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @06:25AM (#49431486)
Many countries have far better service without tipping, China and Japan come to mind.
Re:US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call? on Friday August 21, 2026 @10:11AM (#49388357)
"There’s nothing magic about the $40 trillion number, and we can grow our way out of that" - Bessent

He also claims the number is temporary because of tariff refunds, and that they will reduce the debt with more tariffs.

You ask "Why destroy physical books?"

I ask "Why save physical books?"

If they are truly rare, then they are likely not valuable, otherwise there would be more copies or their contents could be found elsewhere.

Owning and storing physical books is not free, there is a real cost. Even owning and storing the scans is not free, especially when IP rights and challenges get involved, since a scanned book with no distribution is worthless.

I disagree with putting books on a pedestal and saying they must be protected. If they were any good, they would stand on their own, but if we have to run a moral crusade to save them, perhaps we are all better off if they're destroyed.

Sorry, what was the problem we were originally trying to solve again?

Except in extreme cases of fraud or negligence, you won't win a suit against your accountant or lawyer.
Re:Discovery Loop on Thursday August 06, 2026 @01:14AM (#49192746)
Isn't that directionally what OpenAI's core message was for a while?

A large amount of people building their own customized apps for themselves.

Similarily, everyone becoming their own accountant / lawyer / other professional services.

Re:The Future, Made in China on Monday August 03, 2026 @11:19AM (#49156965)
I have found Chinese quality control to be quite good in my daily life here.

Or was that your point?

Wait, no way!

Someone posted a zoomed up photo of a US official (can't recall who) of a notepad a few days ago saying "To do: Buy Yen 5Y - 10Y" or something similar

Bad faith article that makes no mention of the TFWP and LMIA changes which is at least 20,000 individuals

Edit: Also, the population of Canada has grown significantly (see: Century Initiative)

As a percentage of total population, net migration is the same today as it was in 2011, and lower than it was 1991-2011.

This is low quality flamebait.
Re:Chinese chipmaker shares surge 470% on Monday July 27, 2026 @07:27AM (#49067979)
Your example contradicts you.

2K, 4K, and 8K+ TVs have been around forever, and although 4K has become the norm, it's widely accepted that there isn't much benefit for most people above 1080p

Please never check your phone while the film is playing. Major faux pas.
Re:Tesla Balance Bike on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @03:10AM (#49002891)
This is pretty cool, but seems like a massive waste of time for Tesla.
The impact of this is that countless trips will be significantly longer, costing citizens time and gas, and pollute the atmosphere.

Remember to turn your AC down for the good of the planet!

There are people who do this at scale, often reselling online. It's definitely for those who are truly passionate about it, and enjoy discovering new things.

I gave it a shot, and while profitable, just not for me at all.

This is so par for the course for Elon's companies.

He will extract as much as possible, whenever possible.

The bar is just so high, everywhere.

I want to fire off a quick quip and have a conversation.

Reddit is probably the only place where this works any more, but you have to be prompted by the right thread and early.

So people throw up their hands and go, "why bother?"

Huawei's crease is virtually invisible.
Re:WWDC 2026: Apple is Folding on Tuesday June 09, 2026 @10:55AM (#48461977)
How timely, I'm writing this from a Pixel 10 Pro Fold I bought in January.

Last night I opened it to find the inside screen having dead pixels in the center by the bend.

I love foldable phones. I use it all the time in both modes, but now I'm currently procrastinating looking up my best buy warranty plan specifics.

For a small percentage of mobile superusers, I really do believe foldables are the future. Having the ability to use desktop mode by default, or multitask, is huge.

The Reddit thread on this was equal parts amazing and hilarious.
