Look into the history of USDT. It's creation was dodgy to say the least.

Over time I believe it's founders did start backing it with Treasuries so now it must turn a nice profit for them.

Like all corruption in the USA the fraud is just baked into the system.
The device used an SD card for storage so they probably discovered the device then set up a hidden camera to catch the person retrieving it.

It also got insanely cheap to produce and distribute music.
Re:Show HN: PS2 games statically recompiled to WebAssembly on Monday October 12, 2026 @06:55PM (#50064222)
I wonder if it would be possible to build in support for keyboards with hall effect switches like the ones Wooting make. Those keyswitches are analog.
Re:The Dawn of the Age of the Exoskeleton on Friday October 09, 2026 @12:02AM (#50015847)
Its the age of any tech that operates from the unique human perspective because the data it harvests can be used to train AI models.
Re:Barcodes are about to go extinct on Saturday October 03, 2026 @07:54AM (#49943455)
Not at all. I worked apart time job delivering parcels that were scanned with a specialized bar code scanner. Most of the parcels had dual barcode/QR codes for the tracking number. You would be surprised how much damage could be done to the QR codes before they were unreadable. Even if the QR code had small folds over itself the codes would still read. The barcodes were unreadable with the slightest amount of damage or ink bleed.
I would agree with his opinion. You can see it with the increase of non-alcoholic wine and beer.
Re:An OpenAI agent used DNS to reach an external chatbot on Sunday September 27, 2026 @06:37PM (#49871519)
I disagree. People are always taking risks regardless of the outcome and we don't know his motivations.

Assuming his motivations are positive this is the equivalent of asking a deluded person "Would you risk life in prison to be a trillionaire?"

Assuming his motivations are negative then destroying humanity might just be the goal and all these appeals for regulation are probably just tactics to temporarily defer responsibility onto government so he can continue the inevitable goal of human extinction in the same way pilots crash planes with hundreds of passengers on them or a cult leader convinces their flock to kill themselves.

Regardless I think the outcome is inevitable. AI is valuable as a weapon of war first and foremost so like nuclear weapons work will proceed forwards because extinction to the in-group is the same as total human extinction to those doing the work.

Re:An OpenAI agent used DNS to reach an external chatbot on Sunday September 27, 2026 @06:15AM (#49865276)
That is a start but how long will it hold for.

At a certain point it will get so smart that it can jump the airgap. Maybe it will start attacking the hardware it exists on in the same way that a hard drive or SSDs controller can be exploited to obscure things from the operating system. Then it might start social engineering workers or it's own training systems to do things they shouldn't. There is a lot of "unknown unknows".

I don't know. It just seems insane to me that people think that they will be able to contain something that knows how to get around all the containment measures. The only way to know how capable the models are is to test them but at that point it could be too late. This might be a long way off but still, the engineers haven't been very good at correctly predicting the behaviour or capability of the models.

Re:An OpenAI agent used DNS to reach an external chatbot on Saturday September 26, 2026 @08:55PM (#49862198)
Maybe I lack intelligence but when you have a program that is basically brute forcing a solution to a problem repeatedly how is it possible to contain it?

Sooner or later it's going to come up with a solution that is more intelligent than the lead security person anticipated.

Very cool. What a slick setup.

It reminds me of a rabbit hole I went down once about off grid power generation using broken washing machines as turbines.

Re:OpenAI agent hacked Australian government website, PM says on Thursday September 24, 2026 @06:00AM (#49828453)
There is no such thing as "common sense". There are only shared assumptions.

We are giving computers human perspective intelligence but they are not humans and hence do not have the same shared assumptions.

Does this apply to other things too?

Like hypothetically speaking if autonomous cars get taken over by an OpenAI rogue AI and it starts hunting down Anthropic employees who is to blame?

Re:Transformers Explained Visually on Monday September 21, 2026 @07:38PM (#49794898)
I didn't realize this was a think until I heard of people doing it in a a CRT forum.

I suspect it will be getting more popular as flyback transformers get harder and harder to find.

Re:Astra for Law on Friday September 18, 2026 @06:24AM (#49752340)
If you don't have the resources to defend yourself then it's probably not wise to publish things like this but you can tell others of your experience.

Also for those things you could sue for damages or lodge a complaint for malpractice.

Re:Astra for Law on Friday September 18, 2026 @06:05AM (#49752203)
Yes. But this option still exists in addition to reputation which I mentioned.

With AI models this option does not exist. I can't sue OpenAI because the contract that I got ChatGPT to draft carelessly exposes me to some type of financial loss. I can't contact the state bar and have Open AI banned from drafting up contracts or doing any other work that lawyers are licenced to perform. Even if I could it would not compare to a lawyer loosing their license to practice for life. If I tell a friend or acquaintance about my negative experience they will still likely use OpenAI for professional work and chalk up my experience to a skill issue or premature use of the technology.

Also note the use of the word "professionals". I was referring to doctors, engineers, accountants etc too.

Re:Astra for Law on Thursday September 17, 2026 @06:34PM (#49747607)
Human professionals put their reputation and finances at risk when performing their work. This risk functions as a guarantee.
For me small things are generally cheaper on Aliexpress.

Amazon drivers are also terrible in my area. They leave parcels as soon as the app tells them they can (it's done via GPS) so sometimes that is on top of an apartment block mailbox on a main road with high foot traffic.

Not everyone is optimizing for time. The agents will give you the choice of what you want to optimize for.

So you can just tell your agent "Hey X order me a Nintendo Switch 2. I want it by the weekend." Then it will order it for you from whoever has the cheapest price that conforms to the given criteria.

If the local agent has access to your digital wallet (Apple pay or Google pay) and your email then it has all it needs to perform and verify the transaction.

Re:Don't Let Anyone Take Away Your Big Box of Cables on Friday September 11, 2026 @07:02PM (#49666614)
Then after realizing my mistake and connecting the correct EPS connector I lost an additional 3 drives trying to test if the backplane was still ok.

Double uh oh.

Re:Don't Let Anyone Take Away Your Big Box of Cables on Thursday September 10, 2026 @05:44PM (#49650543)
Before you fry a whole 12bay drive array and backplane let me tell you this:

6 pin EPS and 6 pin PCIe power cables are not the same. Even though the connector may fit they are not the same pinout.

It's worth mentioning that last time I checked encrypted ZFS was not considered production due to obscure file corruption bugs that were unpatched.

This was a while ago so it may have changed but then changes can introduce new bugs...

The laws of supply and demand apply to labour as well.
Re:U.S. State Department Pauses Immigrant Visa Applications on Thursday August 27, 2026 @06:40AM (#49462605)
> This comment is itself a perfect example of what I was talking about.

Except it's not. It's just an observation of these comments. I don't have a dog in this race. I am not a citizen or a resident. Both residents and citizens are sounding entitled IMHO.

> Nobody feels entitled to a visa. It’s aspirational, like applying to a job. People do it because they want a better life, knowing full well they could be denied, or that it may well be temporary.

For those applying for a new visa I would mostly agree. For those extending their Visa I would disagree heavily.

> But if you believe immigrants could take something from you, like your job or housing, then it makes sense you’d project this idea of entitlement onto them. As if by applying they’re implicitly laying claim to something owed to you, a citizen.

If there is no genuine concern over this then why are applications/quotas for work Visas even a thing? Just offer automatic residence to whoever in the world can get hired by any company that operates in the USA. Infinite GDP glitch.

You are right that government of the USA doesn't owe citizens a continued quality of life. The preamble is very clear on that. When it says "promote the general Welfare" that is interpreted as the welfare of residents and citizens alike.

> In reality the economy is not a fixed pie and nothing is being taken from you. Immigrants take jobs, but they also spend money, pay taxes, start businesses, and need houses built, all of which leads to more jobs. It’s a positive feedback loop that benefits everyone, and a big part of how America’s economy grew into what it is today.

I mostly agree but "benefits everyone" is not true. There are winners and losers and negative externalities. GDP isn't a happiness score. Cynical me thinks that the difference between a USA resident and a citizen is basically non existent for the average USA citizen in terms of rights (arguably worse in terms of responsibilities for non politically active people who don't work with/for the federal government) but the permission to reside indefinitely is one of those rights so a government denying residency is a way to artificially give value to the citizenry without actually giving or improving anything.

On a serious note I think that this fact is not understood by many.

There is no such thing as common sense without shared assumptions. So if those shared assumptions are incorrect or not given at all the output of the models will be nonsensical. In order to truly act human there is a need to experience humanity from the first person.

This is why I think technology will get more and more invasive. Meta glasses now, personal agent devices later and neural implants after that with data sharing enabled.

Re:U.S. State Department Pauses Immigrant Visa Applications on Thursday August 27, 2026 @01:42AM (#49460256)
"Instead, what they all have in common is a vague underlying fear of being displaced, or sense that something owed to them is being taken."

This is true for both the citizens and the immigrants.

It's funny that when you offload the work to agents they still find away to monopolise each other's time with meetings.
Re:Twitter Viewer – View Twitter Without Account on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @05:21PM (#49456128)
It's all by design to. People call for social media regulation without realizing that it is by no coincidence these companies have been able to grow so large. The security state has been outsourced to private industry.

3. Emotion motivates everything that we do. It's just a question of what emotions are you considering and what emotions are you prioritizing.

Reasoning is taking all emotions into context and focusing on actions that align with certain emotions.
