Like, the drivers manual? We're talking about basic driving skills here. Cars need room to stop, the higher the speed, the more room they need to stop safely. Most human drivers aren't perfect and leave a lot less room than they should, AVs won't share that flaw.
Re:Traffic Engineers’ Epic Fail on Sunday December 17, 2017 @01:48PM (#15947035)
A highway cuts through my city, largely because it used to be very poor and it was politically expedient to prioritize interstate traffic at the expense of city dwellers (there's measurably higher rates of asthma near highways).

Its not just "StrongTowns hates them", it's that a lot of cities have gotten the shit end of the stick, transportation-wise, and people who actually live in the city don't want to live next to a fucking highway for the convenience of suburbanites. It's not a conspiracy, there's political support for these policies in cities.

Just use park and ride, cut throughs can go fuck themselves, you sound entitled as hell. It's not your God given right to shit up other peoples' home with your car.

You also need hardcore vent systems.
Re:Elon Musk’s Ideas About Transportation are Boring on Saturday December 16, 2017 @01:28PM (#15940913)
No you can't, you need to leave stopping distance for safety reasons. If anything AVs will leave more room between cars than human drivers.

Crypto is the new cyber.

I'd say they're more like trading cards than anything.
It's certainly possible there are fraudulent trades driving price, it's pretty easy to do on BTC exchanges.

Someone on r/boston constantly posts links to this garbage "news" source, everyone flags it as spam there, I'm going to flag it as spam here as well.

Re:IOTA Surges Past Ripple on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @09:47AM (#15861366)
>Why does everyone repeat that Byzantine consensus requires maximum 33% of participants to be dishonest?

Not 33% of participants, 33% of the hash power, could just be one participant with a pile of GPUs or ASICS or "JINN" chips lol. That's the claim made by the IOTA author, anyway.

Right now it wouldn't surprise me if someone could amass 90+% of IOTA hash power anyway.

>If messages cannot be forged

Tbh this is not even a given with IOTA.

Re:IOTA Surges Past Ripple on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @09:31AM (#15861251)
The closed-source coordinator, presumably.
Re:IOTA Surges Past Ripple on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @09:31AM (#15861250)
My understanding is you only need 33% of the hash power at any given time. Since PoW is only done as part of sending transactions, it probably takes less hash power than you'd think to cause problems.
Re:IOTA Surges Past Ripple on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @09:29AM (#15861234)
It gets better... their "improved" version of "curl"? Kerl.

You can't make this shit up.

For fun.
Re:System76 ME Firmware Updates Plan on Friday December 01, 2017 @05:48PM (#15828433)
This is a great idea, I'd totally buy a "chromebook" with coreboot and Ubuntu.
You're hopeless, this is not subtle stuff, you're being deliberately obtuse, or you're just plain stupid.
> He seems to have been disavowing racists since the start

Pandering to racists since the start:

* Initial refusal to rebuke David Duke.

* "Rapists" remark.

* Violence on "both sides".

* Not mentioning the Jews on Holocaust Remembrance day.

* No traditional White House Ramadan celebration.

* Attacking the hispanic judge in the Trump U case because of their race.

* Calling for and attempting to implement a "Muslim Ban".

* Appointing Jeff Sessions, who had been denied a judgeship due to his racist beliefs.

* The dog whistling about the lawless "inner cities".

* Supporting the birther theory.

The list goes on and on.

Even when he does rebuke racists, it's never prompt, and always with a wink and a nod. If you don't believe me, go peruse stormfront and look at all the threads celebrating their "victory" when Trump says these things, they recognize what's going on.

Re:Introducing the new Snapchat on Wednesday November 29, 2017 @01:40PM (#15809516)
I know middle aged people who do the same thing, their "performances" are appropriate for their age. Pictures of expensive vacations, manicured gardens and so on. Same phenomenon.

Is it easy for mastodon operators to disable?
Re:The Joy of Erlang; Or, How to Ride a Toruk (2011) on Tuesday November 28, 2017 @03:08PM (#15800940)
It's like how you kinda need to know js to do anything with coffeescript. The fastest way to learn Elixir is to learn Erlang first.

You will be dealing with Erlang data structures (sans syntax sugar), the Erlang stdlib (Elixir doesn't wrap everything) and Erlang libraries to accomplish anything substantial. Sooner or later you'll have to grok Erlang.

This talk is borderline unreadable. Are there slides or something I'm missing?
Re:Warning Signs About Another Giant Bitcoin Exchange on Thursday November 23, 2017 @05:25PM (#15768214)
Which features? Looks like (arithmetic, not bitwise) AND/OR/NOT are supported, I'm not an expert but it seems like this could be do-able. I'll have to think about this more maybe I'm missing something.
Literally they could have just copied BTC and implemented base58check from the get go, it would take any competent programmer an hour or two tops. But it was too much work for the _MASTER PROGRAMMERS_ behind ethereum.

Not too much work to raise hundreds of millions of dollars, though. Ofc something so simple is an EIP.

https://ethereum.stackexchange.com/questions/19640/how-to-se...

Hah wow you weren't kidding. Amateur hour.

To add to your list: no checksum for addresses. If you typo the recipient address, the client will happily render your ether unspendable.

And since they're value-less transactions, essentially unrewarded mining activity.
Re:Warning Signs About Another Giant Bitcoin Exchange on Thursday November 23, 2017 @12:21PM (#15766473)
How do you verify 3-SAT? Just plug in the values and check if it evaluates to TRUE? I assume the idea is to pay people to solve NP-hard problems via TX's, which is a kinda neat idea imo.
Re:I don’t want to be a software developer anymore on Thursday November 23, 2017 @10:37AM (#15765647)
Seriously tons of programmers just churn through tickets written by other people all day, its 100% process, they're part of an assembly line.
Re:Warning Signs About Another Giant Bitcoin Exchange on Wednesday November 22, 2017 @08:53PM (#15762216)
I only count 15 "disabled" opcodes on that chart, the majority are usable in P2SH transactions.

What specifically would you like to see done with Bitcoin scripts that can't be done?
