I had a roommate for the first time again in my early 30s after getting divorced. Looking back now I enjoyed it. I felt that I had to grow up and get my own place again after our lease was up. I think this was true, at the time I did have a two year old daughter and we were living illegally in a warehouse. Not the best way to raise a small child. However, if I could go back, I think I would have found another communal living space. My roommate on the other hand may have more mixed feeling about it given the screaming two year old and my constant cooking of monkfish… which was later barred from the menu.
Re:The Death of Partying in the USA on Wednesday July 09, 2025 @08:55PM (#44516213)
I’ve stopped hosting as many dinner parties because accommodating diverse food preferences has become increasingly challenging. It’s a smaller factor compared to many mentioned in the article, but I thought it was worth adding.
Re:Purelymail: Cheap, no-nonsense email on Sunday January 26, 2025 @10:27PM (#42837092)
I have used this for several years and have had few issues. When I needed support for something (which was my fault) I received a response within a couple of hours.
Re:Greatest “Classic” Mac Laptop: Powerbook G3 Pismo on Wednesday September 13, 2023 @08:46PM (#37503528)
I am nostalgic for this former age too, but I don’t want it back. I don’t lack for ports, swappable bays, or removable media. Sure, the Pismo could be upgraded via a new daughter card and the hard drive was easy to access but that’s because you needed to upgrade every year. Before my new M1 Macbook Air I had a 2012 Macbook Pro that lasted me about eight years. On another note: In the early 2000s I had a Lombard, 2400c, and Thinkpad 600. There is no doubt the 600 was the best built of the three. Both of the Mac’s felt cheap by comparison mostly due to their plastic (though, the Lombard screen was nicer than the 600.) I remember picking up the first aluminum unibody Macbook and thinking “finally something that is as nice as the 600!”
Mine loves killing mice... rats may be a bit too big for her.
Re:Recreating Medieval English Ales on Thursday May 18, 2023 @07:08PM (#35995564)
I think this is a worthy try but I am skeptical if it tastes anything like medieval beer. I imagine the malt is significantly different. Are we still using the same barley varieties as we did hundreds of years ago? Were they able to malt as efficiently? I also think the yeast would have been very different. Which he touches on. Even if you had the exact yeast you would need to know pitching rates. That said, what he created most likely tastes a lot better than what they had in the 1300s.
Both of these statements are true. Getting the right balance is something I struggle with. I am glad I traveled when I was younger. I couldn't repeat the same trips today. However, getting my BMW detailed at 24 was a waste, though it would be a waste today too.
Re:Restaurant real estate gets a radical makeover on Sunday April 30, 2023 @01:37PM (#35764765)
Good point. Brand new homes within 10 minutes of my places of business 485K. Single family homes from the early 2000s start around 425K. You can buy from fixer uppers for around 300K. Townhomes start around 250K and go to around 350K.
Re:Restaurant real estate gets a radical makeover on Sunday April 30, 2023 @12:38PM (#35764215)
I completely agree. I would have to had I been able to.
Re:Restaurant real estate gets a radical makeover on Sunday April 30, 2023 @12:25PM (#35764079)
I own two restaurants and several years ago ate out at upscale restaurants four times a week. One thing the article doesn't touch on is that the labor shortage has decreased the quality of service, which makes it less desirable to eat out. I have gone to several restaurants where the employees are on AirPods (one employee was even listening as they served me.) Many of the best servers and bartenders I know left the profession during the pandemic and have not come back. One may wonder if this due to the lack of pay keeping up with inflation but the team I have makes $35 to $42 an hour, which is up substantially from before the pandemic.
Same here. Though with a dry shampoo (or corn starch) I have found I can make it a few days in between washes.

I feel like jiffyshirts.com already covers a lot of this ground for me. Though they do have dearth of pants.

I am guessing they burned a lot of wood. Which in a small space can heat things very nicely but has other negative effects.
Re:Nobody wants touch-screen glove box latches on Sunday October 30, 2022 @10:38AM (#33394844)
I agree. Not only that, but I find the interface on my phone much better so sometimes I find myself holding my phone instead of using CarPlay...which I admit is even worse.
Re:Ask HN: What book have you re-read 3x or more? on Sunday September 04, 2022 @02:48PM (#32716364)
It changed the way I think about "thinking". I also see myself in the father and son story. I am sorry to be so general but if I jump into the specifics I fear I would ruin them. Not because somebody else couldn't but I know myself to be a horrible teacher.

“Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance” — Robert Pirsig “Siddhartha” — Herman Hesse “Stranger in a Strange Land" - Robert Heinlein "Wind Up Bird Chronicle" - Haruki Murakami

The first two were handed to me by my father when I dropped out of high school. Zen was a slog the first time I read through it, I came back to it my late twenties and have read it at leaset two more times since then.

I think the question I find interesting is are these new startups generating a product that is 1) better than products already available on the market and 2) better enough to justify the 5x to 10x price? I don't know about the products mentioned in the article. I have had mixed results from my own experience of purchasing similarly markets products. However, I am excited about these new products coming to market. If you can 10x my underwear experience bring it on!
Is this a statement that the emulators aren't particular solid or that the Amiga hardware is very reliable?
Is there anything that the original Amiga hardware can do that can't be done in an emulator?

I've heard a rule that it was half the time of the relationship. From my experience your rule is more accurate!
Re:Ask HN: How do I Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck? on Tuesday March 15, 2022 @10:51AM (#30686054)
I suggest checking out the Mr Money Mustache forums. Specifically the Case Study forum. I was in a similar place to you (though with less children), and it took about two years of changes but I now save about 70% of my salary. It has been empowering. It came from a lot of small changes (tips) that rolled to become a mindset change. The Mr Money Mustache forums are focused on retiring early but I prefer to focus on the Financial Independence. I initially thought I would sacrifice happiness, oddly I found the opposite. However everyone is different and I wasn't married when I started, which makes lifestyle changes easier.
Re:My New Old Macintosh SE/30 Computer on Thursday March 03, 2022 @06:33PM (#30548558)
I read every article about classic Macs. Like many of us, these computers are where I got started with my tech love. That said the only thing I really miss is Flying Toasters. Okay, maybe a spacial Finder as well.
Do you worry about consuming too much mercury? I brought down my fish consumption after reading about this risk but I could be overblowing it. Do you have have any advice on how to deal with this?
Re:The underground economy of solitary confinement on Friday February 25, 2022 @09:32AM (#30467670)
Three things occur to me as I read this article: 1) Toilet paper seems like a necessity. 2) In America, we treat our prisoners horribly. We are going to look back on this in a 100 years with the same disdain we look back on slavery. 3) Though I have a hard day a head of me, my life could be far, far worse.
Re:Ask HN: Quit caffeine? Before and after anecdotes on Saturday February 19, 2022 @07:19PM (#30401885)
Coffee increases my anxiety and anger but I love the taste and the ritual. I have quit multiple times only to come back after a couple of months. This usually occurs because I drink too much alcohol one night and need a pickup in the morning. In the last couple of years my alcohol consumption has gone down to next to nothing and three months ago I quit coffee again (hopefully for the last time). If I go cold turkey I get severe migraines for several days. To avoid the migraines I go from regular coffee, to de caffeinated coffee, to tea, to a root tea. Currently, I am trying to avoid a hot drink in the mornings. I have been successful for a week now but miss the ritual.

I agree. Perhaps it was just easier to ignore when we weren't sitting directly next to our children. At least it was for me.

There are communities where the former is the norm. Check out the Mr Money Mustache forums.
Re:Shrooms: What You Need to Know on Saturday December 25, 2021 @11:30AM (#29684522)
I was disappointed the first time I took mushrooms because I didn't see pink elephants. I thought I hadn't taken a high enough dosage. In its place I took a deep trip that allowed me to reflect on where I was in my life, which was more profound then seeing pink elephants. Oddly it too me a couple of weeks to realize that was the point.
Re:Lego Rolls Out a Collection of Wooden Home Accessories on Sunday December 05, 2021 @09:53AM (#29449689)
I believe you are correct. Though, these moves often have the opposite effect on me. Especially with the name plastered over every object.
A few things that jump out to me: Toyota LandCruiser 100, Casper Glow Light, MacBook Air and Design With In Reach Theater Sofa.
