Photons? They cannot be stopped, because they have no "static" mass? As far as they move, they react to gravity, not sure if they can provide its own gravity field. Might be a case as far as they move. Not expert here :)
Re:How Do You Take a Picture of a Black Hole? on Friday October 30, 2026 @07:42AM (#50302622)
For large blackholes of course. And this actually makes other interesting property. Our universe is in fact giant blackhole with our own event horizon outside it. This also support cyclic big bang theory. Once entire universe will collapse to singularity, the smallest possible particles shatters, leaving pure energy. Pure energy doesnt have "static" mass so no gravity => kaboom, we have new iteration. Theory of multiverse (multiple black holes aka universes) is out of scope here because we will never be able to escape ours.
Re:Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11 on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:35AM (#50286058)
You cant be objective on those things too much. Win10 just looks like shit, and its slow. But if someone never used anything better, he will say its okey. Or if all he does on computer is consume media, he doesnt need anything better really. I am heavy CLI oriented, I also like lean and clean solutions and Windows Classic its just best there. I cant find anything that pisses me off, really.

You say scaling? My reply is: go ahead and buy 8k monitor to make things even smaller and play with scaling.. I run 1280x960 resulution so pixel size is sane and everything looks great and readable.

You run 50 apps that you never closes? It seems its personal again, I try to close not used app as soon as its not needed. Running it again is no big deal. If I need to run a lot, I have 4 virtual desktops to group tasks correctly. No issues. But again, you cannot be objective on those things, because its personal. We can align at best if we work in similar way, thats all.

Re:Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @04:52AM (#50256244)
Uh ok. This is very personal stuff. If you are happy with Win10/Win11 GUI, fine. I hate it with passion, and no, I dont speak about corporate vs home (Admin rights and other stuff). Its pure GUI related. Win7 was last windows I liked because it still had classic mode. Anything upward is just retarted.

Yeah, scaling is improvement (but I would be cautionus here, it can bring artifacts). I preffer just good native resolution.

For running stuff quickly, I have an app that handles that:

Can you tell me more? What are you doing that good old classic windows would be barely usable? Im really curious, because I was using corporate Win10 and hell, it was really driving me crazy. Good that there is Cygwin, so I could move most stuff there. Classic Windows just works, and if you care, you can even customize it.
Re:Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11 on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:23PM (#50250385)
Im still running Win2003 here, hence classic GUI (Win2000 like). Works like a charm :) I do some hacking (programing, reverse engineering) and playing games (old of course) on it.
Re:Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11 on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:59PM (#50250050)
Are you nuts? Or wait.. you must be Gen Z then, never really used Win95.. If so, you cant make any statements in the subject.

I still run Windows Classic GUI here, because its fast and confortable to use. Can you do better? Hmm, maybe. But im not conviced :)

% vim --version VIM - Vi IMproved 5.8 (2001 May 31, compiled Jun 1 2001 23:17:28)

No need to retire it, because it just works..

There is new hype now.. AI ;) No need for quantum computing...
Re:What Sun got wrong on Monday September 21, 2026 @01:58PM (#49790851)
Yeah, that was amazing. And so, I learned how to provide LILO + agetty on COM1 on every server I was admining :) So, unless there was HW fault, I could just connect to server via serial to check things out.
Re:It's Not the End of Programming on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @08:03AM (#49447517)
Yeah right, like I want to take over the shit broccoli haired nephews created... Even for 3x paycheck.. The one who takes it is a looser, being exploited for pennies to fix all the shit. And I bet at the end, you will be fired anyway, because you are not of their kind..

Winners are managers (who hired nephews) and nephews themselfs, they did barely any usefull job and got paid a lot. They should do usefull job instead, like drivers, warehouse jobs, services, farming and other less paid but very importand and usefull jobs.

Re:A website for debloated open source alternatives on Monday August 24, 2026 @06:26AM (#49417740)
Heh, HTTP itself is pretty nice and flexible protocol. Its not their fault its get bloated by all shit added to it. Gopher is such inferior protocol compared to HTTP.

http://borg.uu3.net/~borg/ <- impossbile to replicate using gopher. Is it bloated? Hell no...

Re:Version Control for Everything on Friday August 21, 2026 @06:04AM (#49385981)
Cost of keeping all data (up to +100%). If they dont change, no point of really versioning them. Backup of those is simple either, whatever syncing software (incremental).

Docs that often change, its completly different story. I love VCS like features where I can slam 'dot status' to see whats going on, commit when I feel I need snapshot, sync to whatever device I want. And because I run DVFS I dont even bother with backups because I have multiple copies of repo with entire history.

Re:Version Control for Everything on Friday August 21, 2026 @03:27AM (#49384916)
But versionning everything is not really great idea. Probably 90% of your files are static. Archives, Media, LIBs. Not worth versioning. But for that 10%, having any (D)VFS is handy. Thats why I wrote DOT for myself, to handle that niche need to version every document I work with.

Its private for now, but here is printout of help: http://borg.uu3.net/~borg/?dot

Damn, im must be very bad then: 210 lines @ src/webirc.rb Skeletal test, just to move data from/into websocket. Nothing more...

Anyway, yes, doable. But compared to HTTP1/1 request or just TCP socket, way more complicated. That was unexpected.

Hehe, yeah.. I recently touched WebSockets and yes, its complicated stuff. But hey, for vibe coders everything is easy, right? ;)

Spoken like a true websurfer. You know, networking is not only about WWW.
Re:Google Search Is Dying. What Comes Next Is Worse on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @08:50AM (#49257481)
I know DN42, but this network is more oriented toward R&D and experimenting. Yeah, its not for your avarage Joe. But your avarage Joe can buy connection from VPN provider and use it, and so we can provide user friendly PoPs with minimal skills needed to setup, supporting different VPN software.
Re:Google Search Is Dying. What Comes Next Is Worse on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @08:35AM (#49257303)
Nah, it needs to be IP. IP is well estabilished protocol, everything speak it. Once you set it up, you can use it whatever you like. Web pages, gaming service, IRC, Mail, P2P confereces, everything. Everyone will bring it own slice to the pie. You love networking, became PoP and peer and provide access. You just want content? Connect to closest PoP, get IP + DNSproxy and vioala.
Re:Google Search Is Dying. What Comes Next Is Worse on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @08:32AM (#49257275)
How I can strugle to keep them off? To peer to network, you need to talk to human. Arrange L2 connection, assign IPs (only static). If its leaf node, we are done. If its another network, we need to form BGP connections to exchange routing.

Yeah, Network by Humans for Humans. Thats why Im not interested in all those IoT/Auto networks when you just connect and stuff automagically configure. It looks nice at first glance, but you loose control. F2F works way better in that matter, like RetroShare, but I never investigated it much.

Re:Google Search Is Dying. What Comes Next Is Worse on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @03:28AM (#49254558)
The alternative is simple.. Go dark. VPN tech is known from like 30 years. Pretty much everyone can use it (VPN providers). But instead using it to browse net, build VPN overlay networks of interest for people. Gaming networks, R&D networks, Retro Networks. People will peer to PoP and use resources. Bad actor? BAN it from network. You have control. This could be done in Internet, but big corpos and big money won the battle. Just wake F*ing up...

Re:Crickets as Pets on Sunday August 09, 2026 @02:36PM (#49234216)
Beetles? Hmm I never heard about that. Spiders, yes.. And they are huge :)
Haha, I love such statements.. Well I run old Windows w/ 16GB RAM, and on fresh boot it uses around 128MB RAM, leaving plenty of RAM for apps...

Headless Linux is even better, 3GB RAM, 19MB on boot..

Because this is not "Your computer" anymore, but "This PC" :)) muauhauhauhau.

Re:What Do We Know About the Microplastics Inside Us? on Wednesday July 08, 2026 @03:52PM (#48836640)
Once microplastics fall apart futher, to nano-plastic, it will start to get absorbed by T cells because they want to destroy any invaders. Once absorbed, T-Cell start to produce H2O2 to destroy anything they absorbed. Unfortunately, plastics are mostly chemically neutral and so, it cannot be destroyed like that. T-Cells produce more H2O2, eventually it leaks outside and start inflamation of surrunding tissue. There is research about it.
Re:How We Made IPFS Content Publishing 10x Faster on Thursday July 02, 2026 @07:01AM (#48759473)
Comment there made me chuckle..: serving only small static HTML+JS files (<10MiB)

sigh So entire IPFS + IPFS Gateway needs to be so huge? 10MB? My dot.exe (DVFS repo manager) is 150kB..

Re:The Internet I Grew Up with Doesn't Exist Anymore on Thursday July 02, 2026 @03:19AM (#48757701)
Sure, I love text. But I also like HTTP flexibility and ability to embed pics. JavaScript itself is also nice additionion.

Take a look at this: http://borg.uu3.net/~borg/

This is my homepage. Not possible to replicate on gopher from 2 reasons. First, I use JS to render stuff so it looks nice. Second, page is not hosted on IP you are reaching...

Re:How We Made IPFS Content Publishing 10x Faster on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @03:03PM (#48751642)
Yeah.. IPFS is a bit disappointement. I was a bit exceited about it back in the day. Recently, I wanted to download sth large from archive.org, I used torrent (and my legacy torrent client) and it worked like a charm!

It seems pure HTTP tracker + Torrent is good enough.
