Makes me wonder if a modern ESP32 could have beaten him.

Of course, “human vs supercomputer” is more exciting to the public than “human vs toaster controller”.

As a native English speaker, I get the same feeling whenever I read press releases and other announcements from executives.

Hear ye, who speaks of the Pompatus of Claude…
I wonder if seniors are all that safe.

Some bean counter will want to replace the principal devs with juniors since Claude can do all the work instead…

Is that entirely true?

Before those 200 people would be occupied digging the tunnel.

Now you get the tunnel plus 200 people doing other work in society…

Would it? India has some relations with Russia….
Re:Bidirectional Charging During Grid Outages on Sunday November 01, 2026 @10:19PM (#50332763)
I’ve also thought about that.

I figured refrigerator uses about 1KWh per day. Just 2 days would require 200Ah of 12V batteries. Lithium looks attractive for weight and other factors but is more expensive than lead acid.

Have a large overhang that could temporarily be used to lay panels on too.

For portable AC unit, seems like would need another 10KWh per day or so of capacity. At that point, generator becomes more financially practical…

Also wrestle with how much I can depend on solar.

If only 100KWh of battery capacity was practical…

For me the biggest issue is “git rebase” merge conflicts because the surrounding context was modified (especially near beginning/end of functions where the context includes unrelated stuff), or similar in a markdown document.

(If commit A adds a line to the end of a bullet list in markdown and commit B does the same, they will conflict even though resolution is trivial for a human)

I think a lot of “boilerplate” is just to align with a company’s way of doing things/ecosystem.

In a webpage the UI design, authentication, etc. are all “boilerplate” if one just wants to do “X” instead of worry about infrastructure.

I’ve been torn about this. On one hand, I could spend $2k on a small portable generator, get a window unit, lots of extension cords, and survive a few days without power with cords strung all through the house.

I’d still have to deal with wheeling it out, and doing periodic oil changes. Not sure how/where I’d want to deal with a 200lb unit… A natural gas unit would be more practical - I don't have gasoline yard tools.

I could get a transfer switch installed and use my house’s main AC unit. The cost of the larger generator isn’t that much more and I wouldn’t need a window unit and lots of cords.

Of course, then I could skip the portable unit and get a whole house generator with automatic transfer switch.

It’s hard to put a finger on it. The “cheap” solution doesn’t seem worthwhile while the others start making me wonder “how often does the power really go out”? It all seems silly for 3 days outage once every 5-10 years.

Any give up free next-day shipping?
Re:Hex Raises $100M on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:50PM (#50269164)
I also hate them, along with “go to market” and “customer focused”.

I like your origin idea, but “cloud-native” is practically an oxymoron. Somehow taking a simple native application and perverting it to the cloud with added layers of abstraction in both the client and the server is somehow “cloud native”?

Makes downtown New York seem like “natural living”.

Re:Hex Raises $100M on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:43PM (#50269125)
Far less promising companies with zero profits often have thousands more employees…

It’s flashy, but nearly completely devoid of any substance.

The latest Claude models are spooky. About 100x faster then a senior developer snd utterly spooky in the speed and depth of analysis.

This isn’t the “hallucinate everything” style of model like the earlier GPT models…

Of course it’s a joke.

In order to be “patient 0”, he’d have to be human in the first place…

Especially if a once-in-a-decade freak hailstorm can take it out…
Re:Vegemite is not a human right on Monday October 26, 2026 @11:52AM (#50245852)
I’m sure some will try using vegemite as thermal paste…
Especially all at once..

They could have done 10% a year for the next 2-3 years, but the immediate financial gratification wouldn’t be satisfied

Copilot going to pick up the slack of 25% of the workforce?

Re:Xbox Turns Down Netflix $500M Offer on Sunday October 25, 2026 @12:32AM (#50228343)
I feel like gaming controllers for PCs never gained popular acceptance.

Sure, there are advantages to using a keyboard+mouse in a FPS game but it’s a much different gaming experience than a handheld controller.

Wonder when this will be done by DoorDash…

Sounds like that classic joke about a hunter finding his friend unconscious - the one where the dispatcher asks if the friend is dead…
Re:I Don't Understand Quantum Physics (2018) on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:55PM (#50228157)
The math is one thing, but I find the idea that the fundamental pieces of reality aren’t particles a little unsettling.

The classic double-slit experiment is kinda bizarre when one considers the “single electron” case.

Re:I Built a Stereo Vision Board for Hardware Hackers on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:51PM (#50228143)
The SAD algorithm looks neat!

How long does it take? Wouldn’t there be a large range of offsets? Or does limiting the minimum distance help mitigate such?

I suppose there could be corner cases in which an object with regular pattern could be misinterpreted as being far away ?

Re:Speeding up code review with `small-change` on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:40PM (#50228080)
That’s exactly what I meant. When one makes a larger change, they tend to be a bit more thorough.

The tiny 2 or 3 line change that fixes a problem doesn’t always get the same critical thought process.

When it crosses subsystems rarely crossed, there are often nasty surprises.

Re:We should be more ambitious with the software we build on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:27PM (#50228004)
The problem is now the AI can do for $100 what took you 3 months full time.

Employers previously hired you because cheaper alternatives such as offshoring were impractical…

Now the AI is cheaper, faster, and better than domestic labor and offshoring while still hosted domestically…

Some will feel one doesn’t need an experienced rockstar to babysit an AI…

In about an hour I just solved about 80hrs worth of personal coding/debugging with a portion of a $20/month Claude subscription… Frankly it makes all my knowledge and experience feel kinda worthless… I only gave it a few sentences…

To me, the problem with “1.5 degC” messaging as it is treated as a boundary “avoid this or doom”, where “avoid” immediately means decades of economic disadvantage compared countries that ignore the warning.

Rarely, does the messaging talk about actual long-term harms in the form of economic costs with numbers. And if they do, it’s worse than convincing people to be concerned about the extended weather forecast for next month…

It’s really a trade-off that should be discussed with less emotion and more reason. Unfortunately, it involves a timescale that is beyond that of political terms, and remaining lifetimes of elected officials…

Fucking hell!

40+ years of laptop computing and sleep is still a problem !!!

I needed a chuckle and this delivered - “Typescript for SQL” gives me a mental image of a plane crashing into a train wreck.
