Our POTS provider here (Kansas) seems to have given up recently.

Over the last 2 years we've had to call in to get repairs done many times, and I don't know if we ever did in the 20 years before that.

And in the last couple months, our phones regularly quit working completely and we have to call in and go through lots of troubleshooting steps before the tech comes out and fixes the line half a mile away for the 10th time, only for it to quit working in another week or three.

Your central HVAC system, heating, can run on a very small generator though, since the heat is provided by burning propane/NG/fuel oil.

AC needs electricity for the cooling itself too - lots and lots.

Re:If IPv4 Were Land on Saturday October 31, 2026 @03:24PM (#50319216)
Just addressing the last clause in your post: There are only 5 countries with population greater than 1 million that have a lower population density than Canada: Botswana, Libya, Namibia, Australia, Mongolia.

Looking at all countries it ranks 233/246.

You can actually have non-static non-CGNAT addresses.

That's even what you'd get with IPv6 by default.

When I "pay cash" for a medical procedure it's actually with a credit card.

Just means I'm paying them directly instead of making them deal with my insurance.

Yep doing that (actually just countries) eliminated card testing on an e commerce site I maintain.

From hundreds a day, to zero.

The calf is either kept for a replacement or raised for beef. Too much potential value to kill them straight away.
Re:DoorDash to Acquire Instacart on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:52AM (#50300312)
A good chunk of lower class labor isn't tipped.

I don't actually even have DoorDash available, but I can put my money where my mouth is when it comes to restaurants; PLEASE pay your workers a good wage, and then I won't eat there if I can't afford it. I don't know what your wages are, or your operating costs; don't make me guess how much I need to pay your employees for you!

Re:DoorDash to Acquire Instacart on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:50AM (#50300296)
I guess you're talking a much higher minimum wage then Kansas. Minimum wage here is $7.25/hr, which isn't enough to live on practically, so it's not hard to find a job for significantly more than minimum wage.
How do you figure? 5MW for 1 hour is 5MWh.

20.2 GWh is a 5MW plant supplying power for 4,040 hours (5½ months).

And in fact, a lot of washing machines these days use a 3 phase motor. BLDC and a controller.

I wish no one would tip them. Then they'd quit working for minimum wage, then the costs would go up, then I could see the actual cost of the service and make a decision to use it or not.

a tip for an unusual order/circumstance would be fine. Say if you ordered a 50lb bag of cat food, and live on the Nth floor, and the elevators are not working.

Re:Air Purifiers as White Noise Machines on Saturday October 24, 2026 @03:11PM (#50224139)
Your quote didn't indicate that you were specifically asking about the infectious particles.

So you got responses about smoke and dust which are a very very common air quality problem.

Re:Air Purifiers as White Noise Machines on Saturday October 24, 2026 @02:58PM (#50224041)
You wouldn't need a humidifier unless you need one anyways - air filters don't remove moisture.

Maybe it was something from manufacturing that was irritating your throat? Idk.

Re:PHP2Shell: AI uncovers critical RCE in PHP on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @01:45PM (#50184829)
So with that logic, AI won't find a vulnerability in my newly written code, since that particular vulnerability wasn't in its training data?
Citation needed. Apparently the methanol is only slightly concentrated in the heads, and might even be higher in the tails. Plus most of it codistills with the ethanol.
I can't even legally distill ethanol for my amateur chemistry hobby.
Mushroom poisoning is far riskier. The methanol poisoning risk is overstated.
As I understand it, tossing the heads doesn't do much for removing methanol. It gets rid of some other unpleasant compounds though.
I believe the law was made because moonshiners didn't pay the alcohol tax.
Can you give an example of someone poisoned by methanol from home distilling, that wasn't a case of methanol adulteration?
Re:The Fatal Flaw of 911 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @11:14AM (#50131858)
So why do cell phone providers provide that information when you call 911 in Marion County? The 911 dispatcher literally showed me on her computer how the map displays the GPS coordinates of the cell phone, and live updates, and keeps updating even after the call has ended (for 3 minutes maybe? IDR).
Re:Decade-old RAM is making a comeback on Friday October 16, 2026 @08:59PM (#50126755)
Sorry, I was using the term router loosely; personally, I have a CPE connected directly to a managed switch, and a Linux PC running as a router on a stick, then some more switches and wireless APs.
Re:The Fatal Flaw of 911 on Friday October 16, 2026 @08:56PM (#50126735)
And this is rural Kansas too, not Kansas City!
Ofcom is the UK equivalent of FCC. You've got regulations too.
Are you sure LNAs will be an issue? Cause then they'd better ban transistors too, because they can actually be used as a power amplifier for transmitting!
Why wouldn't a gunsmith buy stuff on eBay?

We buy lots of stuff for our dairy/cheese plant business from eBay.

When I worked in a mechanic shop there were always parts on the way from eBay too.

Re:The Fatal Flaw of 911 on Friday October 16, 2026 @04:47PM (#50124433)
For whatever reason, most of the dispatchers for our county are female and it's been that way for as long as can remember. (Been volunteer firefighter for 11 years)

However I'd agree that gender is irrelevant here.

Re:The Fatal Flaw of 911 on Friday October 16, 2026 @04:39PM (#50124329)
The article says the vast majority of places do not know where you are when you call 911; is that true?

I've toured our 911 call center, since I am a volunteer firefighter, and when you call on a cell phone you are immediately located by GPS and displayed on a map, and even tracked for a short time after you hang up.

And I would not expect Marion county Kansas to be up and coming technology-wise.

Re:Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @09:44AM (#50087715)
It depends on what you're buying. I've found plenty of items that are cheaper on Amazon with free shipping, than picking them up in store at Walmart. Which is just crazy.
