Addiction is really boring and makes you really boring. That’s part of why it’s so terrible.

When William Burroughs was on heroin he would spend 6 hours or so a day just staring at his shoe.

There is a scene in a French documentary in which a former Dassault boss displays his vintage wine collection as one of his many tools to ease arms supply deals with various nations. When the journalist asked him if it really works like this he responded, “Of course, because men are pigs!”

Reminded me of a bit from the GOAT political comedy Yes, Prime Minister:

"But he's the Prime Minister!"

"Indeed he is Bernard. He has his own car, a nice house in London, a place in the country, endless publicity and a pension for life. What more does he want?"

"I think he wants to govern Britain."

"Well stop him, Bernard!"

It is greed; LLMs are progress but their cost, and the lies told about them wildly exceed their utility for most of the tasks that they’re otherwise expected to perform. The claims are fraudulent, fraud is a crime, and crime does not benefit society.

We don’t just use these people we create them. Since ancient Egypt the priest class of every society is employed to apply ritual trauma to psychologically prepare princes for their vocation of restless leadership.

Invited me to his house to cut and shorten some shelves for me, after the hardware store refused because I hadn’t bought them there.
Microsoft and its peers have become like a surface nuclear waste storage facility. The remains of something once useful now become dangerous, radioactive, an ever-growing parasitic burden on society, and yet must be continually supported lest there be grave consequences. Will they manage to reprocess themselves or be buried forever?
I’m fed up of hearing that nonsense, no it won’t. Efficiency is a human-defined measure of observed outcomes versus desired outcomes. This is subject to change as much as we are. If we do optimize ourselves to death, it’ll be because it’s what we ultimately want to happen. That may be true for some people but certainly not everyone.

He’s not fooling anyone. In the words of Spiderman, “Look at him! Look at him and laugh!”
That didn’t work out for God, we still killed him.
And I would never work for someone with such a paranoid suspicion of the motives of their employees, who doesn’t want to take any responsibility in their employees’ professional growth, and who doesn’t want to pay them what they’re worth.
Re:Canonicals Interview Process on Sunday June 01, 2025 @01:49PM (#44152583)
So it’s another inhumane interview process from a company led by an apparent psychopath. The author certainly dodged a bullet and graciously wrote this warning. Don’t work for them, they are vampires. Go elsewhere, your life is worth more and you always have a choice.
LLMs certainly think, they’re not conscious however because they don’t enjoy.
Re:State and time are the same thing on Thursday August 29, 2024 @04:13PM (#41394833)
Thanks for sharing that. Einstein and Minkowski knew perfectly well that space and time are inseparable over 100 years ago. >Not sure what religion has to do with it. >absolute time is not falsifiable…you have to believe in it.

Either time is a necessary condition for experience, or it’s a measurable object of experience. It can’t be both. You can’t have time in time. Which one do you believe in?

Re:State and time are the same thing on Thursday August 29, 2024 @05:38AM (#41388970)
Yeah, but so what? Time still has meaning, and is important to us, if only because we know we’re going to die.

Some theologians believe time exists also in Heaven. If that’s so it can’t be like any time we know about.

The author’s Australian so I couldn’t help but read it in the voice of Robert Hughes, to narrate this new shock of the new.

“‘This is the real thing, this deserves respect!’. It isn’t and it doesn’t, and no one cares.”

Re:It's "shakeout" time as losses of Netflix rivals top $5B on Friday December 29, 2023 @12:02PM (#38807263)
Same, and with my toddler we’re back to good old fashioned DVDs. They may be slower, fragile and have a few unskippable parts but at least the ads are predictable, they don’t involve endless scrolling, and they belong to you.
That’s precisely the idea, and they don’t even need to be cheaper. You can’t put a price on controlling other people’s lives, and even if the ship sinks what matters is that the ones in charge did it all their way (or the highway).
Re:Climate Collapse Is Happening Now. What the Heat Tells Us on Wednesday August 16, 2023 @03:10PM (#37152103)
> I do think democracy, the way it currently works, has a problem. It doesn't seem to be able to actually solve problems anymore.

I agree with you and this is because democracy is terminally on the defensive. Which is alas, a losing strategy.

Technological advances (accelerated by capitalism) have brought ever increasing power to the individual and private organizations that the state has to run like a red queen introducing more and more legislation, regulation and increasingly byzantine bureaucracy backed up with the sorcery of propaganda and fiscal–monetary policies to fortify its paranoid self against the imaginary, and very soon to be real horde. “A dying society accumulates laws like a dying man accumulates remedies” because you can’t be under siege forever. “The bomber always gets through”.

Performative work is still very important work. It’s that which keeps those who actually matter happy, entertained, and feeling safe, secure, and comfortable. Dance monkey dance.
