That's a social credit score for businesses, not individuals.
It's weird being a 90s/2000s anti-war, anti-globalization, and pro-labor Democrat in a 2025 world.
It's a simple question in my eyes.

Do people indigenous to a land have the right to defend their lives and property from a foreign, occupying force with violence, if necessary?

It's a shame that one's answer to this question is entirely dependent upon a bronze-age claim.

I've followed The Cradle for a couple of years. For what it's worth I've been able to corroborate much of what is published against other sources, and I believe it's entirely funded by donations.

Rather biased against NATO and Israel, but I suppose that could be a good or bad thing depending on one's perspective.

Aggressively incorrect.

I believe it was Germany's constitutional court, which given the experience of East Germany is understandable.

Re:Dark Academia Grows Up on Monday September 08, 2025 @09:27PM (#45176330)
My grandfather was tenured, published voraciously up until he retired at 73, and was sorely disappointed when I chose not to follow in his footsteps and go into academia. Why? Primarily because I had to hear him gripe about how poorly the school administration treated him and his colleagues, culminating in him having to sue the university several times for the same reasons (and him winning every time in arbitration- he basically tripled his retirement savings).

I have a lot of respect for academics, but the culture around the administration of higher learning is putrid.

No fellow citizen- as long as it's in the name of Liberal Democracy and the Open Society™, the means in question are rather ephemeral.
My wife enjoys telling the story from her time living in the Hague of watching drunk girls in mini skirts all attempting to ride side-by-side to keep each other upright, and...somehow managing to do it.

Re:Wikipedia survives while the rest of the internet breaks on Friday September 05, 2025 @06:25AM (#45137001)
I don't think there can be a resolution on a fundamental level, unless you count some therapeutic attempt at "we're going to pretend like we can grasp truth for the sake of convenience, or because the alternative is too uncomfortable" as a resolution.

The consequence of what it means is that we can't have any justified claims or knowledge at all. If you can't even count on the law of identity you've lost all intelligibility.

Alternatively, objective truth does exist and humans can comprehend it, and the issue of truth versus the development of how we come to understand it is a semantic one (I rather like the distinction between historie and geschichte in German).

To my mind, where we've gone wrong is that we began by assuming transcendentals, holding certain axiomatic, a priori metaphysical assumptions that make the scientific method possible, and then turned around and denied that transcendentals exist in the first place- undercutting the foundation rather than really questioning our tooling or our capacity to understand the data.

All you've accomplished here is to repackage the tired "there are no absolute truths" meme
>"I think the majority of these people joined to uphold law and order or to protect all people in-general"

What delectable naivete.

Re:Librebox: An open source, Roblox-compatible game engine on Saturday August 23, 2025 @04:50PM (#44999027)
To my knowledge emulation is illegal in Japan, as is modding consoles.

Edit: I looked into it a bit more. As it is against the law to dump ROMs from games you have legally purchased, as well as acquiring them through other channels, there is no way to emulate games in Japan in a legal manner.

Having sailed the high seas since middle school I suppose it was only natural that I continue to build upon my multi-terabyte horde of movies, archived websites, books, music, and video games to include content from hobbyist HAM radio operators and long-form urban legend documentaries from YT channels.
Re:YouTube's new anti-adblock measures on Friday June 20, 2025 @08:16PM (#44333364)
Discovery is always going to be an issue, but for those who want to get away from doomscrolling their life away for the algorithm-god, it’s a rather comfy way to enjoy content.
Re:YouTube's new anti-adblock measures on Friday June 20, 2025 @08:15PM (#44333358)
It was around that time that I stopped watching cable television altogether.

If you want to back down memory lane, search on YouTube for old recordings of network TV ad breaks from the late 90s and early 2000s- they’re just obnoxious.

Re:YouTube's new anti-adblock measures on Friday June 20, 2025 @08:10PM (#44333318)
I gave up and wrote a script to scrape the channels I like with yt-dlp into my Plex server.

Until the CALM Act was passed in 2010, networks actually did increase the volume on advertisements.

Searching for “Israel” and “downvotes” and “flagged” in the HN search shows a steady stream of people complaining for years about an apparent coordinated campaign to silence criticism on this website. It’s frankly a ridiculous stain on a website that otherwise has a lot of interesting discussions.
Re:The Rise of the Japanese Toilet on Monday June 02, 2025 @07:32AM (#44157727)
Big Toilet Paper needs to try harder than this.
The sentiment in my circles seems to be that senior-level positions are still going strong.
If you believe that’s the case why aren’t you founding a disruptor to the construction industry with high-skilled, highly-paid labor? Should be easy to eliminate those “opaque costs” and undercut all of your competition, right? Easy money.
Re:A Grand Theft Auto III Re-Implementation on Tuesday October 31, 2023 @10:22PM (#38093887)
> Steam removed games that people legitimately purchased from their personal libraries?

The sad reality is that you purchased a license under terms that allow them to do whatever they want- it’s not really your personal library. Unless a government were to pass a law and fine them about it nothing will happen- it’s what you agreed to when you use services like Steam.

> It really feels like we can't have nice things anymore.

Economists talk about the middle-income trap, but I feel there’s another trap in developed economies. The economics of low-cost, high-skill labor that made the public and private architecture of the past (my small city of around 70,000 people has a gorgeous post office that was built in the early 1900s in a grand neoclassical style) so comparatively extravagant and beautiful just doesn’t work today.

Blame doesn’t lie with the high-skilled working class for not wanting to work for what would amount to poverty wages, but at the same time shareholders and city council meeting-goers refuse to pay the correct price to build beautiful things anymore. It’s a cycle that nobody wants to (or can) give ground on.

This. When I turned eighteen my grandparents took me on an autumn driving tour of New England to visit the haunts of my favorite writers, get a real lobster roll, etc. It was so nice to see the coziness and warmth- charm was the right word for it.
