Hate to play devil's advocate, but it sounds somewhat similar to what Israel does with their airports, but leveraging technology to identify all details (and more than a human could reasonably do), rather than training individuals to do the same.

Methods, deployment (in terms of location) and data retention are obviously the distinguishing factors here.

Re:Amazon Unveils $199 Kindle Fire Tablet on Wednesday September 28, 2011 @11:47AM (#3048457)
What I want to see is how the app market will pan out. I can only assume (and didn't previously consider) that this will not carry Google branding at all - that means the Android Market, Gmail, Maps, etc, apps will all be missing.

The Android Market would be the big loss here. Amazon seems to take more control over the selling of your product than you do once you submit to their Appstore, but if you want to show up on their tablets, you won't have a choice.

Re:Games Now Eligible for NEA Funding on Saturday May 07, 2011 @09:13PM (#2525016)
What matters is that the NEA now officially considers video games worthy of artistic merit, which is pretty damn cool.

Since the first I heard of this (apparent) debate, I wondered why artwork, music, and story were all works of art separately, but the three of them together with a form of interaction by a person was not. The consideration of video games as a form of art doesn't seem like a judgement to me, it seems more like a rationalization.

I think you could stand to improve the c/cpp highlighting.

Found this code using google code search for main.cpp, it is not mine: http://codr.cc/s/1cb504a3/cpp compare with http://code.google.com/p/movement-game/source/browse/trunk/t...

Re:At least now we know why Color really got that funding on Friday March 25, 2011 @06:37PM (#2370638)
Although Gruber is summing it up based on a developer's words, they do state this ridiculous data collection in their privacy policy (which is an implied agreement, based on your downloading of the app).

Harmonix (creators of Guitar Hero, which they sold, and Rock Band) has a similar story. They created a handful of games over a decade or so, all music based, that never really caught on. When they released Guitar Hero and a few karaoke games, they did a little better than breaking even, and with the release of Guitar Hero 2 sales exploded.

Re:Google Maps now show subway routes on Tuesday December 21, 2010 @01:46PM (#2028822)
I moved to the Chicago area around a little over a year ago and this feature has been around at least that long.

It's also available by enabling the "Transit" layer under the "More..." button, and also the transit layer in the Maps application on Android (and presumably the iPhone).

It's an incredibly handy feature when you don't know the area and/or combined with the "Arrive By" option under Public Transit when getting directions.

I want to agree with you so badly (and to some extent, I suppose I do), but any time I consider the margin of users you could "safely" exclude, I consider the competitor who does not.
I didn't down vote, but here's a shot in the dark:

The post concerns Deal Score, something that was added to SeatGeek which aggregates sale prices of seats over time into a general price range and ranks the current sale price against that combined with it's location. The result is a system that may rank higher priced tickets closer to the action as a better deal than a cheaper price from the last row.

You addressed nothing about the topic, but expressed your distaste for SeatGeek (which I believe you meant when you wrote Deal Score, since that is just a number). SeatGeek has been around for a little while, and it's fine if you don't like them, but you are certainly not evaluating their idea with your comment.

Re:Mobile web developers: Your users hate it when you do this on Friday November 19, 2010 @11:56AM (#1921884)
Maybe it's time the browser developers start telling sites what to do and try to standardize use of a custom HTTP request header like this:

  X-Preferred-Format: ('Desktop' | 'Mobile')
I recall creating my password for Verified by Visa, but never successfully entering it again. It's never stopped me from getting the goods and getting charged, though.
Re:Tell HN: Uptick in mean-spirited comments on Sunday October 31, 2010 @11:32AM (#1853425)
I would argue that if there is a way to get a comment on the board at all, those who want to continue arguing will post those comments.

Also, if you can edit your comments, you're opening the door for twisted threads where replies are in one block per person with "@person timestamp," although that's easily fixed by only allowing editing for a short while.

Re:Zynga wants to patent virtual currency in gambling games on Friday October 22, 2010 @09:07AM (#1819518)
Neopets was bashed for some time with claims that the games they produced were similar to gambling games. I think it proves prior art in and of itself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neopets

Microsoft put a shot up of it's store with an Angry Birds icon. The developer(s?) of Angry Birds never said they were making a version for Windows Phone 7.

The developers weren't committed to making the game, Microsoft jumped the gun by implicitly saying they were with that icon.

Close - Dodgeball was created in 2000 and acquired by Google in 2005. In 2009, they discontinued Dodgeball in favor of Google Latitude.

It looks as though prior art existed well before Facebook even existed. I don't think anyone has anything to worry about.

Re:US Navy bombs Guam with frozen, dead mice on Friday October 01, 2010 @06:36PM (#1749038)
"The solution was to drop the mice into the snakes’ natural habitat, the branches of trees in the jungles of Guam. By outfitting the mice with cardboard wings and green party streams, the bait could float down to the jungle and catch on the branches. The result is a hanging, deadly snack for the snakes."

Who says good solutions can't be both low tech and hilarious?

I'm going to second this, as a Google search for "Edith" "eBay Legal Department" provides several other situations where people are still standing (including a site named 'www.paypalwarning.com' who published the letter they received 8 years ago).

Edit: Additionally, if you really have no return contact, then it's just an attempt to push you over since you can't respond.

Re:Ask HN: Review my Twilio SMS app, friendpods on Friday September 17, 2010 @11:21PM (#1703618)
Strangely, I didn't like seeing the "We don't spam." I didn't even suspect it with a cell number.

I understand it's a small website and all, but perhaps a tiny privacy policy would be better?

More thoughts:

It occured to me that a lot of my friends probably don't have unlimited SMS, which is fine, but you might want a way to blacklist a number? Everything is all fun till money gets involved, after all =\

Re:Trouble with Diaspora on Friday September 17, 2010 @07:12PM (#1703145)
I think you're working too hard on the explanation of what happened here.

I think the problem is that four undergrads were given a quarter million dollars to compete with the largest website on the internet and people expected anything but disaster.

Not to downplay a rather interesting vulnerability, but why does it matter if someone figures out where you are?

As much as I love my own real (not internet) privacy, I don't depend on people not knowing where I am. The success of sites such as Foursquare lead me to believe a large amount of people feel the same way.

Re:EVE player destroys over $1000 worth of game time on Monday August 09, 2010 @02:20AM (#1587173)
In the end, the hurdles to overcome to build a game that is both player friendly and Pure PK are pretty high, but only because the players make it that way. On a basic level, if the consequences of PK are too high, it's not worth doing. If they're too low, new players are inherently punished by the (lack of a) system. If it's just right... well, EVE has probably come closer than any other modern MMO, and while I can't find subscriber stats, their most users online record was recently broken at ~60,000. World of Warcraft, on the other hand, boasted 11,500,000 active monthly subscriptions late last year. Any PK oriented game on the same grounds as WoW (in a world, have skills and equipment, etc) hasn't come even remotely close. Really, you might argue that the people have already spoken.
