BatchJob

You could have bought bitcoin when it was a quarter as well and youd be a billionaire. I have refused to take coding tests for my entire long career. I dont have any deep need to get rich working for these companies.

In fact when I have worked for FAANG I was really disappointed at how mediocre these companies are on the inside.

Maybe Im just different, but I believe in supply and demand and it hasnt let me down during my career. The tech industry has applied 100s of millions of dollars in wage suppression tactics over the years but at the end of the day there is still enough supply and demand for good developers coding test or not.

Good luck with your next interview.

People arent fixable

Most of this stuff should die anyway.

Did anyone ever say any of this was "good software"??

Its lowest common denominator crapware. Why rebuild it? Was it really your lifes dream to build that?

Sounds like people figured out how unsustainable data centers are and that they create no jobs.

That should be enough to stop it. But not in America.

Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @05:58PM (#50330789)
I love this: Just hook up your Apple TV for streaming.
I feel sorry for the unaware. Tech has definitely gotten more and more predatory in the last 10 years. I think we can safely say there will never be a solution to the data privacy issue. It will only get worse to the point where people will be catfished out of their data by corporations offering phony services just to get the data like gaming companies do to get data on children.

As much as I dont like the government regulatory capture stuff that happens out there, it does seem that a government that understands what the tech industry is doing and how predatory it is will need to reign this in in the future. Or risk the same thing happening to the govt itself.

Re:It wasn't AI that flipped Proton's charge on Sunday November 01, 2026 @05:49PM (#50330734)
Again the hypocrisy of "AI code doesnt matter...until it does" comes straight through.

"proton is a privacy company though..." Oh So when it matters to YOU, AI slop is a bridge too far.

AI code is not the new norm. Anywhere.

Re:Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half on Sunday November 01, 2026 @09:27AM (#50326033)
You are so conceited. I had to replace a heat pump system at great expense in my brand new house with a gas furnace so my family would not freeze in the winter. This was a direct tax on my home purchase for which the home builder was given tax incentives to install a useless heatpump and electric backup furnace which had an element the size of a kitchen toaster that if it ran enough to heat the house would cost a thousand dollars a month.

This is not Oil and Gas marketing. This is REALITY. Its the conceit of people who refuse to accept reality and their willingness to make everyone else suffer for their phony promises of saving the planet.

If you were to confront these lack of choices yourself you would get a chance to live in the prison you see fit for everyone else.

Re:Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half on Sunday November 01, 2026 @09:09AM (#50325867)
And they all suck. All i have to do is deprioritize my needs and pretend all things are equal and I can sleep well at night in my cold house, waiting to be able to use my car which is still charging while my wife burns my food on a bad stove.

Go take a hike.

Re:The AI cost of JavaScript frameworks on Sunday November 01, 2026 @02:37AM (#50323433)
Unfortunately the author is not only correct about front end development vibes, but due to this state of affairs, I ceased to recognize browser based UIs as being software development at all. Too much browser tech is broken to call it software. As for agents, good for them!
Re:OTape on Sunday November 01, 2026 @01:25AM (#50323168)
All I can say is amazing!
Re:When electric cars were for women on Sunday November 01, 2026 @01:22AM (#50323156)
4 cylinder cars killed the joy of driving in addition to the lack of manual transmissions.
Its not reverse engineering video games. Its being trained on them
While data center management and wrapping open source software and renting deployments is software adjacent and involves alot of software, their scale is impressive, I would not call AWS some huge achievement in software engineering. Operations maybe. Making money is impressive I guess. I applaud them for figuring out how to charge people to transfer files.
Amazons tokenmaxxing problems are of their own making and its their money. I fail to see how Amazons opinion on much of anything is that relevant.

Have you seen that website? While hocking sweatshop products is highly profitable, and their shipping empire is impressive if not destructive to retail shipping in general. I dont really view them as much of a software company.

But each company will need to decide how to usa AI and if they want to publish "deep thoughts" by Amazon, Inc, its a free country.

Personally, the people token maxxing to me are violating the ethos of what it means to be a software developer, so maybe they arent really software devs.

I cant sum it up in a short write up, but one thing true software devs are NOT is - sheep.

The ones that are can go back into real estate after the bust.

I would have preferred that it not have a UI at all and be more like curl on steroids.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:06PM (#50276877)
I love that the house is on fire and Apple wants to drone on about "battery life". They have always been a company in denial but wow.
Re:Tesla Semi catches fire on I-880 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:03PM (#50276819)
Its actually not. Most Tesla accidents are not reported as such. And thats a problem.

Teslas are death machines which should be treated as such.

Re:Proton Flock Camera Map on Sunday October 25, 2026 @11:02PM (#50238544)
This is really great, amazing. Thanks Proton for rolling this out.
The main bottleneck is the humanity I will apply to expunging it, ridiculing it, removing any dignity from it, exposing it, deleting it, removing it, marginalizing it, disabling it, sh* talking it, hounding it, disproving it and banishing it from every corner of every shop I work in, and every life circumstance I find it in for the rest of my natural life.
Re:We should be more ambitious with the software we build on Sunday October 25, 2026 @02:23PM (#50234463)
How can we be "more ambitious" when the quality of everything is so bad?

More ambitious would be valuing the software we write today more in terms of quality. Not using LLMs to generate more code so that we can do large amounts of largely unjustifiable work.

More ambitious could mean scrapping the lowest common denominator processes that enable bad software like scrum. Like corporate "code review" that is just a rubber stamp because noone cares. Like junior developers who refuse to learn and insist they are always right and force garbage code into the system. Like business people who instead of working with engineering teams engage in sidelong hacks to avoid the process.

The cultural/organizational/process/tooling forces that create bad/mediocre/barely passable (from all perspectives) software are everywhere.

Life sucks on software island. Because WE made it suck and we continue to LET it suck.

Re:Roku developer repositories moved from GitHub to GitLab on Saturday October 24, 2026 @09:33PM (#50227353)
There are none. This industry is a joke on all of us.
Re:Roku developer repositories moved from GitHub to GitLab on Saturday October 24, 2026 @12:56PM (#50223055)
I always found it wierd that people flocked to github. The app sucks, if I have to use it for work it infuriates me at nearly every turn with its sad excuse for UI. People like free sh*.

As for gitlab...yuck. But whatever. Most of the dev tool space is really just "sh* we have to put up with now", none of it is any good, all of it is dated from the early aughts, and taken as a whole is even worse because none of it works together.

While software development itself got better in the last ten years these tools stayed the same or got worse (enshittification). And this is part of why folks are self hosting.

The other part is that AI is destroying the Internet and its time to pack your bags anyway. The smart people already have.

Re:A farewell to Arc browser on Thursday October 22, 2026 @07:58PM (#50202784)
It was cute while it lasted. Felt gimmicky. Left after a while. I enjoy side tabs now. As soon as the AI started I jumped off. Didnt figure Ar would last long. I was right.
Re:The iPhone Duo on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @11:11PM (#50190710)
Its not surprising that this device is a frankenphone. What is surprising is that Apple bothered to come in so late to the game and that iPhone owners even care. There are perfectly good foldables in the world that the Duo and the next several Apple foldables (if apple doesnt go out of business because they cant buy RAM) cant touch for usability.

When Apple cant sell you the same exact thing over year after year, what you get is pretty rough.
