Re:As Tech Booms, Workers Turn to Coding for Career Change on Tuesday July 28, 2015 @04:45PM (#9964357)
Sounds eerily similar to the 2000s bust when English majors were being vacuumed up for web development. Maintenance will be fun, I'm sure.
Re:After the Layoffs on Monday July 13, 2015 @07:55PM (#9881959)
Probably the combination of the price of the car and no severance/ bar money, in this case.
> With a pedigree like that one would merely need not get too drunk before the interview to walk on to almost any "cloud" team.

Thanks for that, I needed a nice laugh today.

Thanks for the book recommendation, I'll be sure to check it out.
You're right about being in for a treat. Thanks for the link.
I tried the query. Second link was to your post. I also got some audi links and a Ford link about vehicle colors.
> I do simple things like using duckduckgo, using a private email service that I trust, only using chrome for social media access, and setting Firefox to be as secure as possible and drop all cookies every time I close it.

I read the comment prior to the username and thought your description of browser use sounded familiar, then checked the name and wasn't surprised that it was your blog where I saw this recommendation.

Do you still use Ghostery with Firefox and Fastmail for email?

I really enjoy your blog btw.

Re:Interviewing candidates on Tuesday June 09, 2015 @10:18AM (#9686018)
I second this. I've read a lot of your writings and have even watched your episode of 'Checking in with Erik Meijer', both of are very informative. Thanks for writing this article.
Re:Hard-Core Career Advice For A 13-Year-Old on Friday June 05, 2015 @04:57PM (#9668117)
Can you elaborate on being unprepared? Do they struggle with algorithms and data structures? Do they not grasp the computer at a lower level?

I fully agree with the mediocrity part though.

Re:Eight years today (2012) on Thursday June 04, 2015 @09:47AM (#9659189)
Thanks for including Randy Pausch. His 'Last Lecture' is highly recommended for those who haven't seen it. It can be found in melling's link above or directly here:

I agree completely with avoid being clever. If the situation requires you write clever code, make sure it is commented fully.

I'm sorry about your son.
Re:Ask HN: What project are you working on? on Friday May 22, 2015 @03:10PM (#9590345)
Please do, I'm interested in this.

They likely moved on, but then again dealerships are always looking for sales people. He has the lying requirement down.
Re:Agar.io on Thursday April 30, 2015 @03:17PM (#9467050)
Yea they are, although I have been on the wrong end of it. :)
Re:Agar.io on Thursday April 30, 2015 @03:07PM (#9466993)
Spiky cells breakup the larger cells. I guess similar to the government breaking up monopolies. A bit of a stretch though.
I'm enjoying The Martian by Andy Weir.
Re:Ask HN: What do you think of your new Apple Watch? on Friday April 24, 2015 @01:30PM (#9434768)
That is awesome that your boss enjoys tech like that.
Re:5 Reasons You Should Never Agree to a Police Search on Thursday April 23, 2015 @12:37PM (#9427924)
#5, although I've never tracked that into the car, I have had a cigarette stick to my shoe and end up on the floorboard.

I see vehicle searches all of the time here. Mostly on the interstate. I always wonder why the driver doesn't refuse. Could be they would be detained until the k9 unit arrives. If that were the case who knows how long they will be waiting.

Re:Audi and Amazon to try car-boot delivery service on Thursday April 23, 2015 @12:22PM (#9427777)
Nearly everyone I know has one.

Many houses do too which when triggered call the police.
That sounds like something Ulrich from Silicon Valley would say. Hilarious and true.

Re:Ask HN: Which book are you reading these days? on Thursday April 09, 2015 @12:08PM (#9348563)
Showstopper!

I'm really enjoying it. It is filled with history about creating NT that I've never found online. Also a large amount of information about Cutler, which is interesting.

Re:The daily stand-up is an anti-pattern on Wednesday April 08, 2015 @09:08AM (#9340464)
Ours does too. I find that it is nice to have the additional information when the commit message is a bit general. Although this is a problem with the message itself.

It also can be helpful months later when needing a reminder why something was changed based on an assumed unimportant detail at the time.

Re:The 500-mile email (2002) on Wednesday April 08, 2015 @08:18AM (#9340223)
Thanks for the link. I was surprised that it was written by Larry Osterman. I enjoy listening to his stories about Microsoft. Have you seen his Channel 9 videos [0]? I really enjoy the checking in videos with Erik Meijer.
