Ataraxiaist

I think at some point in the future studying consciousness will be as nonsensical as studying the soul.

I think that is all we really mean anyway and it is just wrapped up in different packaging.

Soul/spirit/consciousness all the same thing. Chasing the same ghost.

Re:A Java library for technical analysis on Monday February 21, 2022 @07:37AM (#30415199)
Not any real money. Technical analysis is toolbox for new traders before they lose money to institutions and quit trading.

Almost all technical analysis is just slicing and dicing a moving average. There is enough of them to try to keep people trading for some time before giving up.

A single price series just doesn't contain much memory.

Re:Francis Ford Coppola’s $100M Dollar Bet on Monday February 21, 2022 @07:22AM (#30415062)
IMDB shows The Irishman budget as a 159 million.

I would suspect it did not make that money back. The studios are in the movie business and not the lighting money on fire business.

I think we have just seen a fundamental shift in the tastes of the 18-35 demographic and what kind of movies they want to see. Quality fast food type movies as opposed to a full sit down multiple course meal type movie.

I love Coppola but I wouldn't want to invest in this project either at this point.

Re:Nothing is more dangerous than a well-read dictator on Monday February 21, 2022 @07:01AM (#30414841)
I have absolutely no interest in being a dictator at all. What an utterly insane statement.

Some people are actually really secure in themselves believe it not.

To me, the biggest difference is that people reacted as individuals or as two individuals interacting.

No one would send out a group email to talk about Bill Clinton and form some kind of group consensus opinion. I think the start of this though was conservative talk radio and the in-group that formed in relation to the "liberal" out-group it promoted. Before that people were individuals deciding their personal stance on an issue to issue basis.

There really should be no surprise that once 99% of interaction is in the context of a groups that everything becomes dominated by in-group and out-groups.

The conservative use of the pejorative "liberal" to form an out-group though was just so poisonous and set a process in motion that once started can't really be stopped. Then once social networks come about it was basically over for the individual.

Millions of individuals are impossible to control but groups no so much. So here we are and I don't see any reason for optimism other than to enjoy your life now.

The future is more and more suspicion and surveillance of the individual by the group.

Re:Tell HN: YouTube and how my wife lost 7 years of work on Sunday February 20, 2022 @07:07AM (#30405088)
The current alternative to me is a form of digital Epicureanism or digital Stoicism in the sense of intentionally not putting any effort into any kind of online digital presence or content creation.

I don't remember anyone being upset if they changed emails and started posting on usenet from a different email address. The discussion at hand was what was important.

People are ultimately causing themselves all this stress and worry over absolutely nothing. All these make believe missed opportunities if you don't put in all this effort to get one of the lottery tickets.

Re:My First 80 Days of VR for Exercise on Sunday February 20, 2022 @06:39AM (#30404972)
The fitness industry is an endless string of fashions and fads to get people motivated to workout and convince themselves that this new method is the one they will actually do.

The novelty of VR aerobics will have the shelf life of Tae Bo, Jazzercise, on and on. I have seen more variations on this theme than the Fast & Furious franchise.

At least when you get sick of the workouts you still have the VR headset that can do other things instead of a rowing machine or treadmill that collects dust.

I even have a decent home gym but go to the commercial gym 90% of the time because working out at home is boring and demotivating. You can't replicate the stimulation of the gym at home. The ritual of going, the other people, not to mention the variety of physical stimulus.

Doesn't this article mean the opposite though when you have so many leaders over 60?

Why would we not want more people in their 50s making decisions vs 70s if we know the brain is slowing down in 60s?

At some point I think this is system 1 vs system 2 thinking in that Daniel Kahneman Thinking Fast Slow context.

I am really not sure though if any of my thought is something other than lookup tables and types of joins.

At least in the US, I think medical information might be what saves us across the board.

I just think the future probably looks more like HIPAA laws than what we have had with a big tech data free for all.

On the other hand, I am not even sure a wearable that takes a blood sample is commercially realistic with medical laws. Sweat sample might be as far as you can realistically go.

Of course, 50 years out who knows.

Every bank is already using a data driven model for credit decisions too. I am sure that is the major input for the human decision already.

Wendy Carlos Beauty and the Beast is my fav non 12-tet piece of music. It is in two scales she made up herself

Terry Riley's Harp of New Albion is awesome as well.

You must not play an instrument because this is completely absurd.
Agree. I think you have to look at it as how much a foolish CEO would cost the company.

This is such a different situation than a golden parachute for a leader who ran the company into the ground. Basically the opposite situation.

I think the problem is that Apple is just so giant at this point it is hard to get your head around. 7X the size of Walmart or Toyota. The idea Walmart could triple in size and not even be close is not at all intuitive.

In a non-academic setting though I have not seen the extremely brilliant person get anything other than the promotions they deserve.

The problem I have seen is that a huge percent of the average thinks they are that brilliant person when they simply are not. I know I surely am not.

Academia though is a completely different animal. The whole system is completely broken beyond repair. Like trying to keep a 1992 Ford Taurus on the road in 2022. We are just setting money on fire to drive a piece of shit instead of investing in a new car.

It seems like quite a political miscalculation. It makes me wonder who advises him because it really is the type of move you would hope your political opposition makes when future elections are involved.
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your companies knowledge base? on Thursday February 17, 2022 @01:00PM (#30376367)
That is a great idea. I feel like the disorganization could even be a feature because then people won't feel like they are breaking something with adding to it.
Re:A 13-year-old used my artificial nose to diagnose pneumonia on Thursday February 17, 2022 @11:22AM (#30374809)
We seem to have a strange anti-intellectual bias in our culture when it comes to children.

I mean I was not pushed hard as a kid to play guitar or play football/wrestling but I was pushed. It took quite a bit of time before I really fell in love with playing guitar. It is hard to fall in love with something when you suck at it. I needed to be pushed. Sports were fun at the time but we completely overstate the value of organized sports IMO.

I don't know why we see playing a musical instrument as something different than learning scientific instruments. We expect the kid to just naturally be driven in science from day one and pushing them is seen as something morally off.

It reminds me of the crazy hockey parent that pushes their kid way too hard in hockey. While some kids might end up hating hockey, a huge % just end up being really good hockey players compared to the average person. People tend to fall in love with things they are good at.

I am childfree but if I did have a kid I would be a science version of the hockey parent and let the chips fall as they may. The risk/reward is just massive for the kid.

Re:A new wave of Linux applications on Thursday February 17, 2022 @10:27AM (#30374075)
That is so beautiful. As a plasma user who doesn't use many apps on android I am completely ready to make this switch.
Re:Facebook staff now to be known as “Metamates” on Thursday February 17, 2022 @09:59AM (#30373733)
I suspect not.

A guy who gives out business cards at the start saying "I'm CEO Bitch" and then takes over the world is probably surrounded by complete "yes people" at this point.

Everything about the Metaverse pivot smells to me like a team that thinks their best interest is to just agree with the Emperor.
