Re:If you love a website, back it up on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @10:01AM (#50352871)
After losing the Japanese indie web of the 00s/10s several times over, I wish it was possible to save not just the websites you love, but the websites you'd love if you actually knew about them. So often do I find out that what I was looking for did exist, but doesn't exist anymore. In particular when only the home page got archived, but not the rest of the website, nor the uploaded files.
They tried to build in the middle of nowhere here in Finland, ended up cutting down an entire forest without permission. I hope they stick to the US.

Without color blindness it looks fine, green-yellow-orange-red. Having checked on a random website what a protan colorblind person might see, yeah, I get your confusion...

Part of the reason is data centers getting droned lately, which also happens to hurt traffic scanning capacity. As those servers get more decentralized or hidden in bunkers, Russia is likely going to move towards white lists again.

While I'm still wary, I hope to one day make use of them to offset my ADHD-like tendencies. Normally you'd have friends or family for that, but in my case a proactive bot would be a more readily available and reliable solution...
Re:Redesigning Source Control at Anthropic on Friday October 16, 2026 @11:04AM (#50119264)
I'm more curious about Antique. Code review is my bottleneck, this meatbag here can't keep up with the agents at all. I either spend too much time and energy on trying to understand the code (not just in terms of review, but to maintain my mental model of the codebase), or just give up and hope for the best.

The over-engineering is definitely a concern too. It's not that how Fable/Opus architect code is bad, far from it, but the projects I'm working with are not always at a scale where it matters as much, and simpler more readable abstractions might be a better trade-off.

Are open weights being considered? The one thing I'm always looking forward to is all of the anime fine-tunes.
The NCC-1701-D really is the default starship in our culture and the training corpus, isn't it.
Re:Ubuntu 26.10 (Stonking Stingray) released on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:05AM (#50103883)
I'm still on Ubuntu and I'm not sure I'm dedicated enough to bother with Debian (especially on a niche laptop, I run Debian on servers), but everything I'm seeing about the new Ubuntu releases makes me want to switch to Mint once 23 (26.04 base) comes out.
Not that different, perhaps, from Russia making businesses responsible for defending their sites against drones. Even threatening to nationalize the businesses that fail to establish adequate defenses. How a business can get ahold of military-grade anti-air defense systems is left mostly unanswered.
Re:Ask HN: What is the current trajectory of a senior engineer? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:31AM (#50086000)
An LLM can order a service to do it for you.
Re:"Just Ask Claude" Is a Rare and Valuable Skill on Monday October 12, 2026 @10:31AM (#50057000)
Hasn't the same always applied to googling on behalf of others? That's why LMGTFY exists too...
Re:I guess I'm using WebP now? on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:46AM (#50053355)
Annoyingly, this doesn't work for a whole lot of websites that insist on serving webp, they just ignore the header. Some of them have bespoke workarounds like adding ?format=original on fandom wikis, with some the server will just never serve you anything other than webp.
I think there's something about US voltages that makes electric kettles really slow. In Europe it's indeed about 2-3 minutes for a full kettle.
How naive we were a decade ago that the biggest problem of IoT devices was their utter unreliability and configuration hell.

They aren't even my fellow citizens, I'm from Europe and mostly buying content from Japan. Yet those American companies still keep getting in the way.
I wish they would face litigation for banning the sale of large swaths of content (or even banning the content altogether on sites relying on donations/subscriptions to survive). Paypros have no business being censors.
We tech guys keep thinking of tech solutions, but as someone who reluctantly has to cross a border of an even more hostile country every now and then, you have to remember that border agents are not stupid and will mark you as suspicious if your open profile does not look real enough or there are traces of encryption on the device (when they connect the phone to forensic tools, they can easily see if something looks off). Being paranoid about security is a huge red flag.

The only thing you can do is travel with a clean device on which you maintain a completely innocuous social presence, such as chats with parents and non-foreign friends, and some social media with normie activity. Even that would not be enough if you're an activist or otherwise personally targeted, as your real accounts are already known in that case and your only option is not to travel at all, but it reduces your chances of getting in trouble (or arrested, depending on the target country). Though it still won't help in the long run as security services collect and organize more and more data about everyone.

Re:I said no and Apple said yes on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @09:14AM (#49800772)
I don't think "use distribution_name" can be a universal advice, the reality of Linux is that you need to research which particular distribution supports your particular hardware well enough. Or try several distributions until you find one that has the least issues.

That, or make hardware compromises and buy a laptop that provides official Linux support, which is likely to have a more Mac/Windows-like experience of things "just working".

Re:I said no and Apple said yes on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @09:09AM (#49800711)
These are web apps, they are unlikely to use anything other than what the browser/OS provide them. This is most likely due to lousy audio drivers, an issue plaguing desktop Linux since its very inception.
Re:I said no and Apple said yes on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @09:05AM (#49800657)
Removing ads from Windows is still much easier than making sure Linux works on a machine that is not Linux-certified (which, for me, is usually the case, as I have particular hardware preferences), and getting software I need to work. I've used Linux for work for a long time, but I'm still sticking to Windows at home. All else being equal I would greatly prefer Linux, but with the current gap (for my purposes) convenience still trumps ideology.
Re:Spain Orders Blocks on Archive.today and Its Mirrors on Monday September 21, 2026 @10:09AM (#49787522)
I use the default one from my carrier, but I've previously tried Google and other DNS servers to no avail. For some reason the site doesn't even open for me through a VPN.
Re:Spain Orders Blocks on Archive.today and Its Mirrors on Monday September 21, 2026 @06:02AM (#49785247)
Ah, so that's why it never works for me.
Re:AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible on Saturday September 19, 2026 @02:34PM (#49769035)
Maybe it's just me, but even on pure aesthetic reasons I would take a Comic Sans and clipart poster made in Word over the slop.

At this point I have some kind of a physical repulsion to the generated posters, and it's always easy to tell from the fontwork and the iconography, let alone illustrations if there are any.

>Note: This post is rated PG-13 for use of a mild expletive. If you are likely to be offended by the repeated use a word commonly heard in elementary school playgrounds, please don’t read any further.

Mild as this ironic passive aggressiveness is, can't imagine something like this in modern sterile corporate messaging.

Re:An Update on Wayback Machine Access on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @11:01AM (#49728116)
Which sucks because these just don't work for me for some reason (Finland, no luck with VPNs either).
Inertia, friend groups, and also a lot of countries other than the US that have no idea about US politics or don't care enough about it.
Re:A misalignment of AI in mathematics on Saturday September 12, 2026 @05:01AM (#49670446)
I think the concern is that humans who are given back their time won't have any means to make use of that time, or even possibly means to survive. The resources will be concentrated in the hands of the few more than ever.
Re:LG TVs aren't the only ones spying on you [video] on Saturday September 05, 2026 @01:10PM (#49578511)
Kinda hard to do when nobody offers dumb TVs with good screens anymore. With printers you have options at least.
