Usually that false quote is attributed to Blaise Pascal, but I have also seen it being attributed to Albert Einstein.

I am a fan of falsely attributed quotes...

You may not want to hear this, but this came down on you the day russian troups entered a sovereign country, the day your missiles attacked a sovereign country.

Slava Ukraini!

The audacity of those bots these days.

Re:EU court rules nuclear energy is clean energy on Saturday September 13, 2025 @04:01AM (#45230223)
I disagree with cheapest. If you factor in twenty years build time and nuclear waste disposal, the whole thing is not economically viable.

Then there's a problem with nuclear fuel. The sources are mostly countries you don't want to depend on.

You are of course right with your assessment that nuclear is green, safe and eco-friendly. That's a hard one to swallow for a lot of eco activists.

The risk of NSAID ulcers can be vastly reduced by Pantoprazole (Protonix®)
Re:An LLM is a lossy encyclopedia on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @05:48AM (#45100896)
The first thing I tell the juniors under my supervision: any LLM is not a fact machine, even though sometimes it pretends to be. Double check everything!
Re:Claude Code IDE Integration for Emacs on Thursday August 07, 2025 @04:57AM (#44822212)
It's not. I use vim on a daily basis, but all I do with it is writing commit messages. The rest I do with an IDE or different editor. I'm surely not alone with that.
Re:Apache ECharts on Wednesday April 09, 2025 @05:08AM (#43630258)
The "Examples" page doesn't work for me. I don't get further than "Line Charts". (Firefox)
> Games are just software engineering. Fun software engineering.

I do question the "fun" part. Midnight crunches, unpaid overtime and - as far as I have read - some of the worst working conditions in all of software engineering. I pass.

I have a TUXEDO Pulse 15 - Gen1 for almost 4 years now. And I am running Debian. Works great for me.
Re:If Architects had to work like Programmers on Wednesday February 21, 2024 @03:20AM (#39451342)
As an architect and tech consultant I mostly advise against going all in on microservices. And when I do recommend them, tooling is never part of the argument. Organizational and team structures are.
Re:My productivity app is a never-ending .txt file (2022) on Monday February 19, 2024 @04:39PM (#39435131)
Almost the same here. But I have two files, one as archive for completed stuff.
Re:All code is technical debt on Wednesday December 20, 2023 @01:37PM (#38712028)
In a similar vein I always try to convince colleagues that the best code is the one that is never written. As a close second the code that has been deleted. It has no bugs and doesn't need maintenance.
Re:The Final Speech from The Great Dictator on Sunday December 17, 2023 @01:20PM (#38674999)
I don't think that it's a contradiction.

Too much of any of those is bad. Four year olds are driven by feeling only. Psychopaths are driven by thought only. You don't want the world in the hands of any of those.

It's a good mix of both feeling and reason that we should strive for.

Re:System76's Lemur Pro Laptop Is Just a Nice Linux Laptop on Thursday November 09, 2023 @10:12AM (#38205998)
I have one running almost all the time. Bought it three years ago and it just works.

When I bought it, there was the option to not include a separate Graphics card. Onboard is just fine for me. And that brought down the price considerably.

However, they currently don't have that many AMD options for Laptops, so my next one probably won't be System76.

PopOS never did it for me. Not once did it survive a system upgrade. So I just switched back to Debian.

Yes, it's different for different patients.

It's also true that chemo treatment has gotten better over the years. Chemo 20 years ago was much harsher and it's not the same anymore. Advancements in pharmacology.

Re:RabbitMQ vs. Kafka – An Architect’s Dilemma (Part 1) on Tuesday September 19, 2023 @04:44PM (#37576264)
Yes, I can confirm that. Confluent is the most expensive part of our current infrastructure.
Re:GraalVM for JDK 21 is here on Tuesday September 19, 2023 @02:24PM (#37574043)
Yes, Jackson really was a bummer. To this day I can't understand how a project like Springboot advertises Graalvm readiness when Jackson is not supported without tweaks. What do the Springboot devs think we are using Springboot for, Hello World blog posts?
Re:Ableton Push 3 on Tuesday May 23, 2023 @06:39AM (#36042338)
I't think, it's not packaging. From RPM to DEB to Snap to flatpack there are lots of options. But support I get. KDE, Gnome or whatever choice of window manager, many different distributions etc., that sounds like support hell.
Re:Ableton Push 3 on Tuesday May 23, 2023 @06:35AM (#36042303)
Looks like they nailed it.

1. Users have been asking for Push 3 for years

2. MPE support looks great

3. Now it's here - and standalone

4. It's modular - you can start out with the non-standalone version and upgrade later

Maybe I am late to recognize that, but with recent developments I get the feeling that AI and machine learning are really getting somewhere now. If it goes forward with the current trajectory, then this could change the world just like radio, television or the internet did.

Sure. I was just over excited. Sorry :)
Re:Java Is in Decline, and There's Data to Prove It on Sunday January 01, 2023 @08:54AM (#34206246)
Java is a bit late to the party, but native binaries are possible for a few years now.
Re:Java Is in Decline, and There's Data to Prove It on Sunday January 01, 2023 @08:51AM (#34206226)
I started Java in 1999. And I have heard these type of stories ever since. If Java is dying, then it's a really long process of dying.

Java is dying in the sense that Beteigeuze is going supernova. Some day it will happen, but it may not be in my lifetime.

Re:Staging is dead: The rise of preview environments on Thursday December 22, 2022 @12:27PM (#34095901)
In the environment I am currently working in we have 250 developers and 13 permanent environments. We also have 200 PRs open at any time. I am not quite sure if we could really save money on environments like the article claims.
Re:Programmers Should Plan for Lower Pay on Saturday November 05, 2022 @04:45PM (#33485500)
I work in a fortune 500 that sees itself explicitly as not a software company. The devs are only viewed as a nuisance by everybody else. The CTO reports to a finance guy. And it's a shit show. I agree with Humphrey and Nadella here and I assume that every company that doesn't get that leaves something valuable on the table.
I bought a kitchen table at Amazon. Now the recommendation engine recommends more kitchen tables and that is going on for half a year now. As long as that is the state of the art, I am not afraid that AI will replace my job, which requires some out of the box thinking.
Re:Ardour 7.0 has been released on Saturday October 15, 2022 @06:50PM (#33219376)
The recent drama has been resolved. For a week or so there was some uncertainty whether all new Bitwig devices would be part of the Studio edition and therefore covered with the cost of the update plan. Bitwig (the company) put out a paid add-on with new devices and announced that there would be other paid add-ons in the future. That caused a lot of negative responses in the community. After a week the Bitwig company apologized, made the add-on part of the regular Studio distribution and ensured that in the future all new devices would be part of the Studio - effectively no additional paid add-ons.

The thing with the licensing server has been fixed. I tried that by turning off my router. No session closing and no data loss whatsoever.

Re:Ask HN: Why is Microsoft Teams still so bad? on Thursday September 22, 2022 @05:35AM (#32936645)
It's comically bad. You can't indent text! As if text chat wasn't invented and being used for 40 years now. The text size limit drives me crazy. But hey, emojis!
