News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

AndrewWarner

Just tried it. I spoke and it turned what I said into a letter, a TikTok script, a song, etc.

I can see how it'd be helpful for times when I know what I want to say but not how to say it.

Just ramble and it turns it into polished writing.

Re:AirPods don't “just work” on Wednesday January 26, 2022 @08:52AM (#30085338)
Most of my frustrations with AirPods could be eliminated if they connected to multiple devices at once. The back-and-forth does not work well.
Re:I did a Mixergy interview so bad they didn't even release it on Wednesday December 22, 2021 @04:11PM (#29655267)
I take full responsibility for not being able to tell the story well back then.

It’s my responsibility more than it is Rob’s.

It was January 2012. I was still learning how to coach the story out of my interviewees. I’ve done a lot of personal work over the last decade to get better and better at that.

I appreciate that Rob trusted me with such a vulnerable story back then. Rob, if you’re reading this thank you.

Re:I did a Mixergy interview so bad they didn't even release it on Wednesday December 22, 2021 @04:09PM (#29655239)
That was probably my way of doing the pre-interview back then. Talking to the guest before we officially start.

What a bold move, Eric! What does a Minimum Viable Product for a stock exchange look like?

Re:Show HN: I built a podcast app that skips over the ads on Wednesday December 04, 2019 @03:37PM (#21706640)
As a podcaster (Mixergy.com), I love this.

My listeners should never feel guilty about skipping ads.

If my ads aren't interesting or don't improve your life, you owe it to yourself to skip.

I keep working to improve my ads. Most recently: I hired a copywriter (Neville Medhora) to go over my ad reads. And today I recorded interviews with 10-second ads, instead of 3-minute ones.

Is there a link to the audio download somewhere?

I can’t see it, but Id like to listen to this instead of reading it

Re:Lyft Takes over Ford GoBike on Tuesday June 11, 2019 @07:53PM (#20160582)
It's been tough to find a bike from them.

I've been a happy customer for years (first in DC and now SF), but ever since they removed their electric bikes, their docks have been empty so often that I can't count on using them any more.

Re:Stripe Is Now a $20B Company on Wednesday September 26, 2018 @07:56PM (#18081248)
As a client, I love working with them. I never thought I'd say that about a payment processor.

I get pitched lower rates by their competitors all the time, but their software sucks. Giving a refund on Authorize.net feels like I'm being forced to travel back to the 1990s web.

Stripe's site is intuitive, their rates are good, they integrate easily with every software I use and their customer service speaks to me like humans. (Plus they have patio11)

Re:Is the Lean Startup Dead? on Wednesday September 05, 2018 @11:24AM (#17918800)
The problem I see with the Lean Startup is that Eric Ries isn’t actively promoting, defending and explaining it.

On Mixergy, I interview founders who try to make their bones or get attention for their messages by disagreeing with the Lean approach.

Eric doesn’t debate, correct or engage with them. So they get to make statements without anyone credible taking them on.

Listen to my latest interview it’s Rand Fishkin and you’ll see what I mean. He’s not anti-Lean, but he’s disagreeing with it his book to make get attention for his message. With a bit of pushback from me, he admits as much.

Each one of these mini-attacks from accomplished entrepreneurs hurts Lean’s credibility.

Only Eric has the credibility and social grace to disagree and explain in a way that builds up The Lean Startup.

I’d love to see him step into the conversation more. He and pg defined how to run a successful startup more than any two people I know.

We need to hear more from both of them.

I think the first time I really noticed a Weebly blog was on the bottom of Jessica Livingston's site: http://www.foundersatwork.com/

After reading about Weebly's growth on Hacker News, a few years ago I interviewed the founder about how they did it:

Re:Amazon Wants to Extend Its Dominance in Audiobooks on Wednesday February 07, 2018 @09:57AM (#16324762)
The Libby app has free, unlimited audiobooks.

I read a few commenters here talk about how expensive Audible is. Not only does this eliminate the cost, but I’ve found that when I have unlimited access, it leads me to try audiobooks I never would have considered before.

The one possible downside is that you need to walk into your library for a moment and get a library card. But it’s easy.

And if you don’t live in the US it might not be available, which is always painful

Just search the apps store. It's in there.
Re:Uber Bike – A New Way to Commute or Explore on Wednesday January 31, 2018 @04:00PM (#16277502)
Hunting bikes down can be a pain.

Someone left one at the bike depot near my office and I spent 20 minutes trying to find it before giving up.

That problem should go away when there are more bikes, but as others have said here, then it might lead to crowding issues.

Re:Uber Bike – A New Way to Commute or Explore on Wednesday January 31, 2018 @03:26PM (#16277242)
Looks like a lot of you can't access the site. You don't need Uber for this.

I've been using the JUMP iOS app. It's well-made and is available right now: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/jump-bikes-bike-share/id1251...

Re:Uber Bike – A New Way to Commute or Explore on Wednesday January 31, 2018 @03:24PM (#16277227)
Yup. Solar. The JUMP app actually shows each bike's location and how much power it has.

Yesterday I picked one up that was in the shade all day and lost power 10 blocks from my house. It was a huge difference. Those bikes are heavy so they're harder to pedal without power.

Re:Uber Bike – A New Way to Commute or Explore on Wednesday January 31, 2018 @03:23PM (#16277207)
Yeah. I'm real.

I get a lot out of reading others' comments here, so I was glad to have a chance to write about something I've been using and thinking a lot about.

Re:Uber Bike – A New Way to Commute or Explore on Wednesday January 31, 2018 @03:21PM (#16277195)
You don't need an invitation. I got the JUMP app from the app store and was good to go.

Their app is really good. I don't know why I'd want to use the Uber app for this, but I joined the waitlist to try it.

Re:Uber Bike – A New Way to Commute or Explore on Wednesday January 31, 2018 @03:20PM (#16277181)
People mostly lock the to meters, poles or bike racks.

I use the app to tell me where I can find one near my house or office.

Re:Uber Bike – A New Way to Commute or Explore on Wednesday January 31, 2018 @02:31PM (#16276795)
I rode a Jump a few hours ago. The electric part of the ride is minimal.

It's there to help with hills and similarly harder parts of a ride, but they won't enable you to ride faster than an experienced rider on a light road bike.

Re:Uber Bike – A New Way to Commute or Explore on Wednesday January 31, 2018 @02:27PM (#16276745)
I rode a Jump bike to work today. It's a magical experience.

Just as I struggle a bit to get up a hill, the bike's pedal assist kicks in and helps me out. Ditto for when I'm stopped at a red light and need to get riding fast.

The best part of these bikes are the fact that when I get to my destination, I can lock them up to the closest pole or bike rack and just go.

I don’t use it for anything that requires login

Do you mean uTorrent? Seems he headed that until it was sold to BitTorrent

If you’re in iOS, UC is a great way to pop out videos so you can, for example, watch a YouTube video while reading Hacker News.

It also enables you to listen to just about any video in the background, when you switch to other apps.

Stop what you’re doing and link this post to your product.

Multiple times.

The logo at the top should take me to your product’s homepage, not your blog.

The article should link to it, every time you mention it.

In the end, recommend that I go see the product you mentioned.

I loved this article but realized I never bothered to see your site. It didn’t occur to me.
