Urgh wtf...

This meta discussion synopsis "Tech-Transcendentalism as Hypermodern Myth and Neofeudal Ideology [all creatures welcome]" feels like reading a rabit hole of a mountain.

I would have loved another talk from Joscha, the critisism is weirdly ignorant.

Re:50% of U.S. vinyl buyers don't own a record player on Friday January 02, 2026 @08:20AM (#46464451)
A rock is not a consumer good, so no.

And a rock is unique, nice to look at, did not cost you anything and kind of an appreciation of nature.

Enjoy your rock! (i'm sincere)

Re:50% of U.S. vinyl buyers don't own a record player on Friday January 02, 2026 @07:07AM (#46463997)
You are not a recovering audiophile at all, you are still fully in that rabbithole. Instead of enjoying music you ramble about your neighbor shaking and isolation etc.

You also didn't pivoted into preservation, it just happened because of whatever 'audiophile' thinking you think you have.

At the end you just stream music as everyone else.

Which is fine.

Re:50% of U.S. vinyl buyers don't own a record player on Friday January 02, 2026 @07:04AM (#46463966)
The cover might gotten the relevant input from the band but the vinyl itself has only a handful of options and plenty of them are just black.

But come on do you listen to music of a band becase they are great in taking pictures? Or because they are really really good in standing next to a vinyl press?

No

You appreiciate their music and you don't need a commercial token to do so.

Re:50% of U.S. vinyl buyers don't own a record player on Friday January 02, 2026 @06:59AM (#46463936)
No we don't.

We should stop fantasizing about CDs and Vinyl and shit and just enjoying listen to music.

And if we think we need tokens in the real world, make them yourself or buy that one vinyl.

Re:50% of U.S. vinyl buyers don't own a record player on Friday January 02, 2026 @06:55AM (#46463911)
So you go to work, earn money, then you buy yourself some object to put it in a shelf?

And thats basically it?

You are not even playing it?

To do what with it? Letting your kids/family sell your collection with a loss?

Is it background decoration for you? Couldn't you just buy bulk of Vinyl no one wants to use it for your decoration purposes?

That feels like consumerism at the peak.

Re:BYD Sells 4.6M Vehicles in 2025, Meets Revised Sales Goal on Friday January 02, 2026 @06:50AM (#46463873)
Talking about FSD has increased, nothing more.

There is still the law suite about FSD and the old hardware.

There is still Elon the hitler Musk Oligarch who wielded a chainsaw.

There were plenty of FSD videos last year and the year before showing that FSD is working. The question is still, is it working good enough, and what will be the business of a robotaxi.

The Taxi market overall is not that big, competition is hard and the most critical thing is peak demand.

In parallel random people believe tesla will wipe out the whole taxi industry + private cars tomorrow. Ignoring competition and everything else.

Aaand as an edit: When it finally works, people will tell you "told you so look at it, FSD works" yeah really? Of course it works but it was promised from Musk that 2020 all these Teslas will drive autonomsly. Its 2026

Gaming should be a no brainer. Windows dual boot and license is cheap enough.

Windows for gaming, Ubuntu as desktop default, Arch Linux on Laptop, MacOS on the other Laptop.

Games are not the problem, but that one game i want to play on a saturday evening when i have time, is the problem. That one i haven't tried out yet.

Apparently we all have enough money to put it into OpenAI.

Some players have to play, like google, some players want to play like USA vs. China.

Besides that, chatting with an LLM is very very convincing. Normal non technical people can see what 'this thing' can already do and as long as the progress is continuing as fast as it currently is, its still a very easy to sell future.

Because OpenAI stands for AI leader.

If Gemini can create or edit an image, chatgpt needs to be able to do this too. Who wants to copy&paste prompts between ai agents?

Also if you want to have more semantics, you add image, video and audio to your model. It gets smarter because of it.

OpenAI is also relevant bigger than antropic and is known as a generic 'helper'. Antropic probably saw the benefits of being more focused on developer which allows it to succeed longer in the game for the amount of money they have.

You always have this problem thats why you have a release process for apis.

And monorepo or not, bad software developers will always run into this issue. Most software will not have 'many teams'. Most software is written by a lot of small companies doing niche things. Big software companies with more than one team, normally have release managers.

My tipp: use architecture unit tests for external facing APIs. If you are a smaller company: 24/7 doesn't has to be the thing, just communicate this to your customers but overall if you run SaaS Software and still don't know how to do zero-downtime-deployment in 2025/2026, just do whatever you are still doing because man come on...

Re:Ask HN: Does reading HN make you happy? on Tuesday December 30, 2025 @03:08PM (#46437406)
I assumed your post was more generic and not specific about LLMs or AI.

Generally speaking, while the disucssions are 'better', they are not good. The comments themselves seldom add real value, discussions are not held with sources and if you start to have a discussion, the other person stops responding to your arguments.

Its 'fun' because i think i like to discuss but i have often than not the feeling i have to explain things

While you mentioned LLMs: I do think that simplifing what LLMs are to a statistical parrot, shows how little people on hn know about LLMs, at least the ones commenting on it and repeating this every time.

With the crypto garbage, i had plenty of people not responding to proper arguments from my side and it feels empty.

HN is seldom stress.

?

My Ford Mustang Mach-e has great software. It works, is reliable, supports apple and android car.

BMW software stack does even more.

Where is this coming from? What are the features you are missing?

BMW can be remote controled also Mercedes and VW btw.

I would argue that Tesla didn't lose its way, it used it way to get were they are and now you see the deficits of it.

They started without all the legacy and worries. Like existing suppliers, existing things, existing image. Fresh market, modern software development etc. brought them a proper market share.

Now the olds had to update themselves, which they did and now they are stuck with tesla.

But thats it. Tesla doesn't has that much innovation. Plenty of things did not materialize at all.

Honestly, i know a few Tesla users and at least for them their Tesla is more than just a car. Its like a gimmick.

Driving to tesla meetups, adding certain accessories for led light stuff, its (sry to say) just weird.

I get the basic idea of telling the internet about some issue and getting faster feedback than from the manufacturer, but I never had the feeling i needed any of this for my non Tesla EV.

And as i mentioned in my comment: I would hate all the regular updates. As long as everything works as expected, pls do not change anything.

My personal bet is on nvidia. They always show advanced selfdriving capabilities based on ML.

They are also forefront of ml simulation. 3D, weather pattern etc.

Tesla also had plenty of missshapes like Dojo or cybertruck and the sitll not finished FSD.

My Car OS from Ford Mustang Mach-e works completly fine. No clue why this is some advantage Tesla should have? BMW just launched their new Gen 6 incl. their new os.

All the advantages of that fully integrated 'platform' also just works in my car?

BMW is very good in lane keeping, Mercedes can drive more km in germany autonomes than BMW and BMW can drive more km than Tesla.

I of course focus on german brands because i'm from germany. But XPeng and others working on all of that too.

I own a Mustang Mach-E and I do not want to have weekly updates to my car software.

If you look at your updates, the FSD one is clearly a beta thing now for so long, of course you need to update regularly if you still change that much. Btw. Musk said 2014 that FSD will allow you to sleep in your Car while driving in 2023. Soooo?

Something like Grok was also added OTA in my Ford car. So yes they can do it apparently too.

Everything else just feels like gimicks I wouldn't want to have. I drive my car i do not play with my car. My car is not a gimmick.
