Re:The Film Students Who Can No Longer Sit Through Films on Saturday January 31, 2026 @04:10PM (#46840895)
The ability to focus is not decreasing.

When studies are published talking about “attention span” decreasing they mean the amount of time people spend paying attention to one thing. They don’t mean people’s capacity for attention is decreasing.

I’m a bit surprised to see this myth is still around, but looking at the source maybe I shouldn’t be

This has always been known by domain experts.

The problem has never been availability of minerals.

It is the environmental damage from the polluting extraction process and lack of operational know how and trade secrets to do it efficiently.

An often overlooked competitive advantage China has is lack of environmental regulations

Not me. Their "Core Brand Family Consumer". And I have no reason to believe it is inaccurate.
It can't be as appealing and addictive as cocaine but most commonly be abused as a study drug and have recreational use be much less common.

It would never happen. So it must be much less appealing than cocaine.

All abuse is bad. Some abuses are worse than others.

What abuse are they seeing with adderall? What I hear in casual conversations is that people are abusing it to learn things. Is that what the DEA was seeing too?

It’s the opposite of compelling. The fact the tech and knowledge is well established but not widely used means it’s less profitable and not competitive with traditional farming except in exceptional circumstances
Mexico City to Edmonton Alberta is a 48 hour drive
I don’t get it. How could a high tech green house ever be more profitable than free sunshine, dirt

Your product gets, what? Max $2.50/# retail?

A single anecdote does not summarize the current state of the country. Assuming that something as complex as the state of a country can be summarized in any rational way.
What exactly is the point you are making?

That ADHD is over diagnosed?

That it doesn’t require tailored interventions or advice?

That social media is exploiting interest in ADHD to provide low quality advice?

Or something else? Can you clarify your point?

Ukraine did signed the deal.

How is the US helping Putin?
Re:Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting on Saturday March 01, 2025 @03:42AM (#43217346)
You think Germany and France are invested in defending Ukraine when the US isn’t doing the heavy lifting?
Re:Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting on Saturday March 01, 2025 @03:41AM (#43217337)
The leaders of Germany and France don’t see Ukraine as part of their destiny. And that’s their right.
Big tech is building data centres. Data centres pollute. Environmentalists are part of the left wing coalition.
And now you know why big tech was so quick to kiss Trumps ring, and dump DEI. Their alliance with the left was no longer useful to them.

Elon Musk once again showed his forethought and boldness in seizing first mover advantage and going all in on this.

It’s about money and power (power to make more money) for big tech. Such was the case when they aligned with the left and it is when they court the right. Don’t take it personally and don’t shoot the messenger.

The Prime Ministership is by convention and not defined in a constitution
It’s expected and it is normal.

There is no term limit for PM or members of parliament.

They stay on until they lose the support of their party.

He lost the support of his party due to his extreme unpopularity and the impact it will have on the future election. As seen by polls and bye elections.

More often the leader loses party support after an election loss.

However in this case, a loss is so likely and expected to be so bad that his party would rather go to the polls with a different leader.

Canada has no term limit. Leaders stay on until they have lost the support of their party.

Often that happens after a devastating election loss.

In this case it is happening because of his extreme unpopularity before the election and his parties hope of improving their election prospects under a different leader

That’s an improvement on what lazy teachers do now, grade the students current assignment based on their previous work or reputation or how much they like the student.

Tip for students: do well on your first assignment. The better teachers will give you the benefit of the doubt for mistakes on your future work. The bad teachers will just give you the same grade.

Having older siblings and friends with older siblings and resubmitting their essay is eye opening.

If true, the child may simply be experimenting with ChatGPT as we all have.

The process described sounds like it is a lot more work than just answering the questions using knowledge.

Re:India's food shortage filled American libraries on Wednesday January 01, 2025 @09:38PM (#42571117)
What doesn’t make sense? That humidity affects the likelihood that an ancient text will be preserved?

Humidity doesn’t guarantee that something will rot. It makes it more likely.

The item will need to be protected from the natural environment. Or stored in a location that is an exception to the general climate.

Compare that to the Middle East. Where the natural climate assists in preservation.

Re:India's food shortage filled American libraries on Wednesday January 01, 2025 @03:20AM (#42564704)
Because it was memorized.

Hot and humid climates result in (historically)rapid decay of plant and animal based writing surfaces

Re:Hobby CAD, CNC machining, and resin casting on Tuesday October 29, 2024 @09:44PM (#41991174)
It’s hard for me to believe that using a CNC to mill a model for resin casting works better than 3D printing it and casting it.

I’d expect that with 3D printing you can even print the spruce and risers.

The study tested two incorrect positions and the correct position. It “confirmed” that the correct position is correct.

So it’s nothing new, and not anything that isn’t in practice and part of basic procedure

> And they underscore the importance of adhering to clinical guidelines calling for firm support on a desk or other surface when measuring blood pressure, the investigators add.

Smart. Cash in on the fad while you can.
1. Your response doesn’t seem to contradict my statement. It seems to add context. So my point #1 stands. Tracking online prices doesn’t tell us what people are paying in store.

Regarding the bread price fixing scandal, that ended 14 years ago. It ended when internal executives reported it.

The current anger and activism is over the post Covid price rise in food. No one is saying that that is due to price fixing, or collusion. Except random people in forums or fringe bloggers with phds from unknown institutions.

There is actual price fixing. But it is t the grocery stores. It’s the dairy producers. But politically they apparently aren’t a good target.

1. Online prices are not the same as in store prices

2. No one, other than random people in messages forums, is alleging collusion or price fixing. No one at any university, not the government, not the media.

3. The government’s investigation, which many of the conspiracy theorists site as evidence, shows a lack of competition led to 1 or 2 % increase in price over 12 years, and the vast majority of the price increases was due to things like war in Ukraine, Covid restrictions, fuel prices due to energy crisis.

Every residential land lord in Canada is increasingly rent the maximum legally allowed amount.

They don’t need AI or analysis.

Canada has record immigration levels. And at the same time cities across the country decided, with the support of voters, that new residential development can not be on undeveloped lands. It must be on previously developed lands and increase density

Of course redevelopment is more expensive, takes longer, requires more consultation and planning.

The result is a severe shortage of housing.

Instead of solving this with suburban sprawl, which isn’t ideal but is necessary, politician, voters, and density ideologist choose to blame a scapegoat.

Landlords are an obvious candidate. Adding AI to the mix makes it a trendy story.

A species that was eliminated by hunter gatherers or sailors with clubs is going to have a hard time getting out control.
