Humans try to replicate the human brain in software and are surprised it sometimes spits out dumb things a human could have said.
An area worth exploring are IP cameras imho

1. They are everywhere and aren't going anywhere.. 2. Network infrastructure to ingest and analyze thousands of cameras producing video footage is very demanding.. 3. Low power and low latency scream asic to me

Any other creative pursuit that involves some level of engineering.

Buy a 3D printer, start some woodworking/furniture stuff, learn to weld. Dig a pond and breed koi fish.

Fair enough, at least the limits they proposed are among the best in the world. Credit where credit is due!
"First ever" has been used very leniently here. Maybe it's the first ever for any state in America but the rest of the world definitely already has limits on it.

The best vegemite I ever had was from a 6 foor 4 muscular man in Brussels
Does it support OpenVPN?
Did they get consent?
I got some FreeStyle Abotts for anyone who wants to hack away at them. Rumor has it Dexcom is cheaper in bulk than Abotts and they are losing hospitals as customers.
I've tried out HerbGrind but it often gets stuck and reports an error E_STONED.
Re:Does offering ChatGPT a tip cause it to generate better text? on Saturday February 24, 2024 @09:41PM (#39497122)
Breaking News, BuzzFeed man can take a joke amd fires back.

I appreciate defining a clear hypothesis and the exploring an LLM using statistics. I feel like the analysis could benefit from prompts that contain neutral consequenses as well. You have given it clear positive rewards, clear negative ones and no reward. Neutral consequences may be a better baseline than no reward.

Re:Does offering ChatGPT a tip cause it to generate better text? on Saturday February 24, 2024 @09:17PM (#39497023)
TL;DR BuzzFeed man performs statistical analysis on LLM output, in an attempt to determine hidden internally encoded motives.

Next up, for a more clickbaity titel, BuzzFeed man pretends to be therapist to uncover LLM's dark secret.

I only wrote this snarky comment because 90% of the authors job is to evaluate the effectiveness of their clickbaity titles, or am I wrong?

O hey WinRAR!

On a more serious note, cool app. The iconic WinRAR notice to purchase a license would be a nice easteregg.

I wish him all the best, fighting cancer is a tough battle. After he beats his own cancer, perhaps he has energy to defeat the cancer that is FSF.
Re:Ask HN: Are there any fulfilling careers in tech anymore? on Tuesday August 29, 2023 @09:08AM (#37307285)
I think everyone struggles with this at a certain point in life and this extends beyond the tech sector.

Understanding the impact of your work is not always easy, but it is a necessity to feel like you are performing meaningful work.

What helps me is talking to customers and understand how our product makes their life better and what my role is in building the product.

Whether you are picking fruit, flipping burgers or building tech, you are a little cog in a system that hopefully produces a net positive to humanity.

IIRC you can even spoof the URL, so the URL on screen is not what you will be directed to. It is a perfect ground for phishing attacks. PS: Skype and Teams share parts of the same XML message format, you can have some fun there too :)
Typical extortionist behavior.

Their first attempt failed, so they just try and piggy back on this media hype wrt to api changes eve tho they dont give a damn, just to blow up this supposed breach and add fuel to the existing fire.

Please add an automatic archive.ph checker pls for adblocked/paywalled sites, and rewrite urls to automatically go to the archive

Re:The Emotional Roller Coaster of Changing Requirements on Tuesday April 11, 2023 @03:56AM (#35522175)
I was once tasked to build an integration while working directly under the CTO. They designed their own API and claimed there was no specification in the ecosystem that we needed to follow.

I noticed that there was a specification and I informed them that we might want to change our system to match it. The request was ignored and instead I tried to make incremental suggestions to their design to make it more compliant with the existing specification.

We release the system and the first feedback we got was backlash for not following the spec.

We are now 9 months later and the CEO has requested that we follow the specification and I now get to rewrite the system.

I hardly find any motivation to rewrite the system, I haven't talked to the CTO for a few months and now suddenly they offload a bunch of their tasks on us by personally assigning us work and just invites our manager to listen in lol

> How many ping pong balls do you need to lift a Ferrari from the bottom of a lake?

I estimate about 55,000?

Ferarri is 1300kg, needs 1300 liters, 1.3m^3 of air to be buoyant, and assuming square pingpong ball of 3cm, that be ballpark 46k. Add some extra for current, drag, mud

You should contribute to open source project that has reviewers, it's like doing a test and having it graded by teachers.

Up until that point, you weren't an idiot and just a frustrated developer.
