And yet a billion people in this world are starving... Cutting back on industrial agriculture means participating in a genocide, basically.
Some geeks here are coming up with sci-fi ideas of producing food in vertical farms, or underwater, why don't we start by simply using existing techniques?
And what's wrong with that? "Gig" is not a real job, so it doesn't have to pay a real salary :) It's a temporary solution for people in-between jobs.
> Poland and Hungary are shitfests, with almost complete political control of the justice system.
That's not exactly true, Poland is a country where most of the judges are basically in open rebellion against the current government, and the government can't do shit about it.
I think the point is: App Stores for iPhone and iPads are in reality one and the same. Apple tries to artificially split them, so they can avoid regulations for at least one of them.
So the first third took millions of years, second third took roughly 6-7k years, and the last third took 200 years?
Yes, they did, but did it really take less effort than running it on Kubernetes?
I remember them deliberately limiting hash rate of their cards because the did not want them to be used by miners.
Roubini is a victim of his own popularity. He was nicknamed "Dr. Doom" once, and now he desperately wants to live up to that name, so he keeps predicting the next doom. I wouldn't take any of his predictions seriously.
But if they don't re-offend that means that this "parking ticket" actually worked, right? The goal is to make the company follow the law, not push it to bankruptcy as a revenge.
When was the last time in history of mankind when taxes were actually distributed to the poor? I mean in significant amounts, not as a lame attempt to win upcoming elections.
> (insulation, ending car dependency, and legislating products that aren't landfill help the poor rather than hindering them)
That's not at all what "Fit for 55" program is about. I agree, those things, over long enough timespan (say, 20 years) could be net positive. Instead, "Fit for 55" means imposing additional "carbon tax" on many industries, and on goods imported from China, based on how much carbon was emitted when producing them. And given the short, 7 years time frame the net result of those policies will be what I originally claimed: pushing everyone to poverty.
EU politicians say it quite openly really, that in order to "save us from the climate catastrophe" we need to sacrifice the standard of living.
Is it "men's sense of identity" or is it "women expectations towards men", though? I think the latter plays much bigger role in divorce decisions. Women are like rats, basically, they are first to jump a sinking ship.
I think it is just a draft, given more time they could come up with better units.
The thing is, Might and Magic RPG series was always merge of both worlds: creatures looked mystical, but you were made aware that the story takes place on some distant planet (and occasionally you visited a spaceship, and shot a blaster). Having Forge faction in Armageddons Blade would be a direct continuation of the plot introduced in Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor, but I think 3DO did not realize that Heroes series created their separate fanbase, not familiar with the RPG games at all...
public transit already is subscription model: you buy a ticket for a ride, or the monthly pass. It is even easier to deny you access to some form of public transport already (think subway entry gates, or long distance trains where you cannot really avoid ticket check). All this follows Klaus Schwab vision for the mankind "you'll own nothing and you'll be happy".
Heroes III purists will count all the things you listed as downgrades :) For me Heroes IV is the favorite game in the series.
One piece of trivia that I learned recently about Heroes II Armageddons Blade: there was supposed to be a race based on high tech, which was ditched, because of the fan's outcry: https://mightandmagic.fandom.com/wiki/Forge_(town)
I really wish they included it.
Or a great way to get yourself invaded by said superpower.
The only way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% is to push everyone into poverty, basically. Make the car ownership too expensive for common folks, as well as meat consumption, air travel, and more.
That's because they do all of the above, and more, indirectly, using Russia as their puppet. They are too smart to do this openly. But you know, Putin would not start the war if he wasn't sure of China's support.
Yep, US sanctions were working in the past, when US economy dominated the world. Right now sanctioning a country just means that you are giving China a free reign over it.
What do you mean "big"? fits on the average laptop :)
Except EU is not a single market: there's 27 countries, speaking multiple languages, having different laws, so to serve the EU you need at least a dozen versions of your app.
Also, EU has just decided that this half billion of consumers will be downgraded to the third world standard of living (google "Fit for 55"), so they won't really have much money to spend on tech toys anyway...
How does Waymo compare to human drivers when it comes to driving style? I've seen some complaints that it is annoyingly slow and indecisive sometimes, e.g. taking forever to make a left turn. Is this something Waymo also analyzes? Any hard data on that?
The problem is: human body is very energy efficient, and processed food is very calorie dense. Burning enough calories to make up for all the junk food is almost impossible, except maybe for professional athletes that spend 5+ hours a day training or competing. You can't outrun a doughnut, basically.
> Scientists should be running the show
Hard disagree. Scientists have tunnel vision, they are so focused on their own area of expertise that they totally ignore second order effects their actions have on society. Covid pandemic was one such example: scientists advised lockdowns, which did not help much in stopping virus spread, but did ruin the economy.
Replace "chatgpt" with "stackoverflow" and the share goes to 90% :)
There's a lot of the middle ground between "median income" and "$10 million per year". There are stories in the web about people who struggle to make ends meet on $400-500k income, because of "lifestyle inflation": big house, expensive clothes, eating out in fancy restaurants, exotic vacations - those people would pay tons of VAT tax :)
For people who actually make $10 million per year, and do not pay much in VAT, there are still better ways to tax them than the income tax (which they can avoid with some tax optimization scheme), like property taxes, or capital gain tax.
It's Apple approach to market segmentation: you want more than 1 external monitor? Buy macbook pro with M1/M2 Pro/Max, for a $1000 more.
The problem is, if a man hit all these points there's really no reason for him to form a relationship with a woman. Ideal state for a man is being single and having series of one night stands :) Relationships are for those who have trouble attracting women and once they succeed they want to keep their "prey" forever. /s
