Re:Can't fish Ethernet? Use "invisible" fiber instead on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @02:42AM (#50349194)
Exactly this. And if not this, it’s the transceiver.
Re:Why are car keys so expensive to replace? on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @02:41AM (#50349181)
But Rivian has no dealerships and their car keys cost $250.
Re:Scaling Git at OpenAI on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:24PM (#50347654)
It's AI slop. AI coding agents write much more voluminous code, in my experience. The base code is more expansive, and there are more tests, and there are many, many more commits as you keep fixing and fixing and fixing over and over and over.
If’s fine. They’re the smartest guys in the room.
Anthropic isn’t capable of not using AI anymore, so there is no off switch. Their AI could turn evil and they’d still have to use it. They are compromised by AI; it controls them now.
Re:OpenIDEA: The IDE you know, rebuilt in Rust on Sunday November 01, 2026 @12:43PM (#50327804)
This is fantastic. The Jetbrains Java fetish has always crippled these otherwise good tools.
A Faraday cage would not let light escape. That is the definition.
A Faraday cage is dirt cheap compared to the secrets stored in an air gapped server or data center. Every air gap should be Faraday caged, it’s table stakes.
Unless the cameras facilitate abortions or somehow aid Democratic candidates for office.
Anthropic is acting like any regular selfish corporation despite their PBC status. They are becoming a stain on humanity. Power will corrupt anyone, it seems. We shouldn’t let Anthropic have any more of it. Distributed power is good; concentrated power is very bad.

Anthropic tells themselves that only they can steer AI towards a positive future for humanity. But that’s nowhere near close to being true. Humans are quite genetically homogenous and good humans exist everywhere. Groups that will keep AI beneficial have popped up (and will keep popping up) everywhere, spontaneously.

The danger is actually concentration of AI power due to its corrupting influence, and that is where Anthropic needs to be kept in check. Keep AI democratic through decentralization of power. Oppose Anthropic.

If that were all there was to it, they would just pocket the profits. They’re cutting prices because they need to stoke enough demand to pay for their ever greater and every more costly capacity.
A blog with a single post on it is fast? Shock.
Re:Incremental rust builds up to 92x faster than cargo/rustc on Monday October 26, 2026 @11:52PM (#50254532)
Unfortunate naming which conflicts with Google’s Blaze, but I would love to integrate this with Bazel persistent workers. Bazel, for the most part, can build Rust better than cargo can.

It’s unfortunate that Rust’s incremental compilation has so many bugs with -Z threads, maybe this can work around that.

Re:The new iPad mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @11:00PM (#50254242)
Some people are born with nervous systems which aren’t capable of noticing the difference, just like there are people who can’t see better than 20/20 no matter how good their optical acuity is.
Re:Free Software Is a Failure on Saturday October 24, 2026 @07:20PM (#50226482)
It's a failure because AI beat the FSF to the punch: it made software effectively free, as in freedom. You can have whatever software you like, now. The FSF never came close to that.
The parallelism is nice, but it only helps cloud inferencers if there is an efficiency improvement. Autoregressive inference isn't parallel, but parallelism can be recovered with sufficient batching.
Re:Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @10:35PM (#50190483)
Airbnb drives up the rents of residential neighborhoods to benefit rich travelers. YC needs to stop investing in these morally questionable businesses.
Similar to the solar roof debacle when bailing out SolarCity.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Saturday October 17, 2026 @05:18PM (#50135238)
It has rockets to accelerate, but no rockets to decelerate to fix a launch mistake, or a launch in the wrong direction. It's a death trap.
So it's a car for wankers. Makes sense.
A car that can make you, your friends, and your family deaf. Amazing.
Re:Ubuntu 26.10 (Stonking Stingray) released on Thursday October 15, 2026 @04:48PM (#50109994)
It will be another hundred years before their market share ticks up another 3%. Distros. What a worthless dead end endeavor.
Re:Apple: Switch to Safari (From Chrome) on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @10:38AM (#50088432)
Firefox is not an upgrade from either Chrome or Safari.
Re:Apple: Switch to Safari (From Chrome) on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @10:38AM (#50088419)
Safari is so slow. I would never switch.
Buy the original PragmataPro and support original creators. The rest are ripoffs, plain and simpls, copied by leeches.
Re:Solar Panels That Plug into Your Wall on Monday October 12, 2026 @10:56AM (#50057349)
This is fun, but utility-scale solar is far cheaper.
Re:Yes I Understand How LLMs Work on Sunday October 11, 2026 @10:47PM (#50050724)
This is one of the dumbest takes I’ve read online in a while. We are nowhere close to understanding the complex emergent behavior arising from LLMs. The author comes across as so simple they don’t even know what they don’t know. Like a confident high school freshman. They would probably claim we also understand how the human mind works because we know about atoms and molecules.
Re:LLMs Aren't Inevitable on Saturday October 10, 2026 @02:16PM (#50035600)
What a waste of time. Arguing over the definition of “inevitable” like a child trying to get out of something. Almost nothing aside from perhaps heat death of the universe is literally inevitable. However, in the world we live in, AI is practically inevitable outside of an asteroid strike ending all life on earth. It’s almost as certain as the sun rising in the east.
Re:Computers Cannot Make Decisions on Saturday October 10, 2026 @02:06PM (#50035491)
Humans can make decisions because they have a random number generator inside of them, and therefore computers cannot? Or are you making a free-will argument based on some mystical substance in a human brain? You need to think this through a bit more.
Not quite the same. Attaching a GPS tracker involves physical trespass and can track a person to non-public locations. Also, collecting data does not restrict one’s freedom of moment. Nor is it stalking. Stalking is a pattern of conduct designed to intimidate or inflict emotional distress. Flock may facilitate staking, but it is not stalking itself. If knowing that someone else knows you were at a particular location at a particular time causes you distress, you have issues. Do you flee from every other car that sees on the road?
