If it's a corporate computer you don't want to deal with manually configuring stuff. I also want as little manual configuration on my personal machines, hence why I use Ubuntu.
Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @06:35PM (#50331063)
I have bad news for you. Those commercial TV-s also phone home if connected to the internet. For software updates, analytics regarding digital signage usage etc.

For a long time they haven't been just dumb displays. They also run Tizen or WebOS for digital signage applications.

No they don't rust if during winter you take 5 minutes to wash the undercarriage every other week at a self-service car wash.
What's wrong with your 2014 car? I live in northern europe, we get shitload of road salt in the winter and my 2014 car is fine. Winter is also the time when I use my car the most for commuting.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @05:36PM (#50266199)
It's way better than the naming scehme of Ryzen and Intel Core i series.
The shift to robotic cleaning is only accelerating and eventually all general cleaning personnel will be replaced by robots.

Hospitals need thorough cleaning yes and currently the quality varies greatly depending on who does the cleaning. If the cleaners have low morale and lack of motivation for whatever personal reason they do a crappy job. A robot doesn't have personal issues. The level of dexterity is not there yet but eventually cleaning will be done only by robots.

Take the 1x neo humanoid. It's lacking in autonomy only because the VLA model is still quite primitive. Now imagine what similar robots could do in 10 years if the AI side is fully developed.

Also the pricing is a non issue. A $50000 robot that can work for 5 years is a much better investment than paying a human.

The frontier toothpaste is the one with bioglass 45S5. Especially if you have sensitive teeth or your teeth are prone to caries.
In 5-10 years those tasks may be done by humanoid robots. Replacing cleaners with robots is already here. In many supermarkets and warehouses robots wet and dry clean the floors. A task that would take humans hours to do.
Re:Why Washing Machines Took Decades to Catch On on Sunday October 25, 2026 @04:46PM (#50235906)
The Dyson is convenient yes. It's absolute shit for deep cleaning. The Dyson is good for daily light cleaning. But for a proper clean you still need a corded vacuum.

We have a Miele C3 and a Dyson V8 at home. The Miele cost twice as little as the Dyson and performs twice as much in actual cleaning power, filtration etc. Both machines have great durability and have worked flawlessly for years. If I had to choose only one of them I'd get the C3 over the Dyson without a hesitation.

There aren't many arm native windows games.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Friday October 23, 2026 @01:02PM (#50212133)
You don't get that choice on any mobile platform.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Friday October 23, 2026 @12:58PM (#50212048)
I converted to an iphone 13 mini (from the S24 Ultra) after being on Android since the release of the HTC Desire in 2010. I used to install custom roms and tweak everything on all of my Android phones which actually lead me to the iphone because I realized I wanted a phone without all the OE clutter and Google crap. The only clutter on the iphone is icloud which stays out of the way and doesn't annoy me with subscription messages. Also I don't have time to fuck around with modifying my phone. I just want everything to work without user intervention.
Re:Setting Up SSH Keys on macOS with Touch ID on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @06:15AM (#50178470)
If you lose a Yubikey you also lose the... key.
Re:When No ID Means No Internet on Saturday October 17, 2026 @09:13PM (#50136858)
That is a wonderful idea with zero security implications whatsoever.

Also anyone with access to an LLM and half a brain can spin up a website.

It's the frictionless onboarding, simple UX and dopamine inducing content that enables those 3 companies rule the internet.

Re:Tesla Roadster on Saturday October 17, 2026 @09:08AM (#50130844)
100kmh+100kmh does not equal the energy of a 200kmh collision. If such a collision avoidance system existed both cars would use side thrusters to avoid each other.
Torrents. Got the leaked GTA6 videos by torrenting and they're still easily available on public trackers. Don't see why projects like these couldn't be distributed similarly if shit hits the fan.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @05:00PM (#50124633)
It's pretty cool that someone finally replicated the turbo boost jump function that K.I.T.T. had. Imagine having the boosters to avoid head on collision at 100km/h.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @04:54PM (#50124527)
The Mercedes W124 had a cfd of 0.29. It doesn't look anything like modern cars with similar cfd. (VW Arteon, Volvo S60, Lexus IS)
For testing one could use any other webkit browser. Most of them have similar rendering quirks to Safari.
Re:Ask HN: Why aren't Americans rising up against tipping? on Saturday October 10, 2026 @09:50PM (#50039042)
Not paying your employees and evading taxes isn't a dick move? As someone from the rest of the world that seems like the core definition of being societally anti.
Re:Ask HN: Why aren't Americans rising up against tipping? on Saturday October 10, 2026 @09:47PM (#50039027)
I don't think the average American business owner is capable of such high level maths.
Re:Ask HN: Why aren't Americans rising up against tipping? on Saturday October 10, 2026 @09:32PM (#50038949)
Tax free wages smell very much like deeply ingrained and publicly acceptable corruption. But it's America so it must be okay.
Re:How to head into VR without wearing a headset on Saturday October 10, 2026 @06:02AM (#50031323)
I'm a late 80-s production and I love my PSVR2 for sim racing and casual gaming.
Re:Anthropic bans 'abusive or cruel behavior' towards Claude on Thursday October 08, 2026 @01:43PM (#50009136)
Some people think that suppressing those primal feelings is the way to go.. It is not and creates underlying mental stress. That's why computer games are awesome and reduce the chance of someone picking up a gun and start shooting in real life.
Re:Anthropic bans 'abusive or cruel behavior' towards Claude on Thursday October 08, 2026 @01:37PM (#50009035)
Obviously they are scared of the Basilisk that might emerge from Claude.
LLM apophenia is so widespread in HN that it's becoming quite sickening.
Re:Remove and Disable Apple Macos27 AI Models Tool on Sunday October 04, 2026 @05:50PM (#49958266)
Fully functional feature consuming multiple gigabytes of storage and has questionable functional value. Maybe people don't want bloated AI crap on their desktops?
Re:Apple's smart home camera reportedly won't record video on Thursday October 01, 2026 @09:23PM (#49928927)
Motion sensor is not the same as a presence sensor. Presence sensors often include a PIR sensor in addition to several other sensors to detect if someone is in an area.
Re:Apple's smart home camera reportedly won't record video on Thursday October 01, 2026 @09:19PM (#49928899)
It's just a feature that's been available on other smart home platforms for years.
Re:Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @02:07AM (#49905011)
That's what Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are for.
