I'm reminded of an old commercial depicting kids taunting another kid by asking "What time is it at Billy's house? 12 O'Clock! 12 O'Clock! 12 O'Clock!" Might have been a Blockbuster commercial? I can't remember.

It'd have to be a long hall. The tapestry is, like 70m!
Re:Amazon's "Digital Pacifier" for Toddlers on Monday October 26, 2026 @12:00PM (#50246007)
Agreed. Same goes for adults unfortunately. And for some reason, it reminded me that we used to have lawn darts when I was a kid.
Then let the doors be shut on them so they may play the fool nowhere but in their own house!
Ugh, that's scummy. I still carry around a Libre CGM reader rather than installing the app.

Similarly, I would avoid Factorio then if hobby programming is burning you out.
Re:I Switched to Brave Browser on Monday September 28, 2026 @11:32AM (#49879650)
Maybe they meant to link to the element where it says the guy invented Javascript. That would have been more appropriate.
Re:2DWillNeverDie on Friday September 25, 2026 @07:56AM (#49843372)
Seems to have been smoothed out though. The Ode to Castlevania DLC is arguably the best the game has to offer, and apparently with Konami's blessing. "Beating" the level is truly a joy.
Re:The Bayeux Tapestry: Woven by the Victors on Friday September 25, 2026 @07:41AM (#49843206)
I was there last year. It's outstanding. It's also a nice little town.

Not going to lie, I thought that was the point.
Re:Bespoke: A Programming Language for People Who Say Please on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @02:07PM (#49630755)
Automatic garbage collection is not assumed; one formally engages the groundskeeper.

Fantastic.

The unfortunate part is that while a lot of people might want that information, few will pay for it. I ran a small company's paywall, like this was a small chain of local papers. We could barely give the subscriptions away.
Your first point is true, unequivocally so. I watched it happen ... from inside the newsroom for almost two decades.

We were actually taught in journalism school to write straight-up news for a Grade 5 level audience. You could get fancy if you chose in opinion pieces.

To your second point, if it bleeds it leads. That's always been the case. Journalism is, and always has been, a business. A sensational news story of yesteryear is today's viral content. It's the same thing — both are desirable because they sell.

Re:My Students Think About AI on Friday September 04, 2026 @01:52PM (#49567922)
Good read. That undergrads have concern watching 10 year olds use GPT to do their math homework is at the same time precious, reassuring and terrifying.

Re:Retirement Is Dead on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @01:10PM (#49539297)
Man, I though MacLean's was dead. I haven't see one of those in 25 years. But from the article:

Forty per cent of us in this age range have less than $5,000 in savings.

That's Canadians, aged 55-64. I expect younger generations will be no different. It's an awful lot of people, given the age demographic in the country.

Re:Roget's Thesaurus on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @02:41PM (#49526176)
Outstanding.
I saw it last year. It was fascinating. But, I mean, it was behind glass in a dark corridor-type room. We were not allowed to take photos of it.

I liked the town quite a bit too. Some great food and drink, I love how seedy the bar/tabacs feel there. Their Notre Dame is lovely.

As much as I'm no fan of Thiel, it is an artifact worth preserving. Thiel hopefully donates and that's the last we ever think about this.

Re:Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America on Monday August 31, 2026 @11:57AM (#49511277)
Maybe this was Google being cheeky for once. When I, a Canadian, dragged over the map, the Lake remained Lake Ontario.

When I search for Lake America, the pin sets itself directly over the same lake with the text "Lake America: The smallest of the five great lakes."

I hope this was intentional.

I thoroughly enjoyed that. I plan to read it again later while stoned.
Re:Your AI Generated Menu Triggered My Trypophobia on Friday August 28, 2026 @09:44AM (#49478371)
That is one insane eldritch breakfast burrito. I am not certain I would want to eat at an establishment capable of being persuaded that was an acceptable facsimile.
Re:The turbulent AI era is here on Thursday August 27, 2026 @07:54AM (#49463302)
It's kind of like what us Canadians say about the U.S. sometimes — that they'll always do the right thing, after they've tried everything else.
Re:Is Ground News a Psy-Op? (2026) on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @09:24AM (#49433634)
Great article. Something has always stunk about Ground News to me, especially when I see it as a YouTube video essay sponsor for people like Hank Green or Leeja Miller. It truly is a vehicle for enabling the worst aspects of bothsides-ism and legitimizing poor journalism through false equivalence.

As a former reporter, I tell people that news can and should be biased. Why do the job of a journalist, why even get up in the morning, if you don't have values and beliefs.

If you want a completely unbaised platform, go to Facebook or Twitter. They literally don't care about anything except reflecting more of everything.

Less friction, considerably faster. I have a statistician friend who's recently made the jump away from R. I think he would agree with you.
I'd disagree if it weren't so likely!
Re:What Garbage Collection Costs on Thursday August 13, 2026 @10:37AM (#49286660)
I used to write a lot of Javascript-like Extendscript scripts back when I was using InDesign a lot. The DOM's global object $ had a method to directly invoke the garbage collector. It made a difference certainly, but it was difficult to tell to what extent because InDesign itself gradually leaks memory and becomes more bloated the longer you use it in a single session.
Re:LinkedIn CringeBot 3000 on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @01:38PM (#49276036)
Oh boy.

The "Request a Day off Button" is basically alert("NO"), which would indicate that functionality's probably been around since Day 1.
