Re:Too Hot for Humans, But Google Servers Keep Humming on Friday March 23, 2012 @10:50PM (#3748311)
In the picture it sure does look like a row of evaporative coolers - there was no mention of them in the article - so maybe I'm wrong.

If he does not get back to you - check out 'amirmansour' profile->comments - the answer seems to be yes.
Re:SpaceX Prepares For April 30 Launch To Space Station on Monday March 19, 2012 @04:25AM (#3722949)
Spectator here: I too am so excited about the upcoming launch I have been hanging out for it and wish them the best of luck too (even though luck has nothing to do with it and plain good engineering does).

I read the SpaceX pages, reports and updates with the same excitement I had when I read about the Saturn V, the Apollo craft the Lunar Lander, the Shuttle, and the engineering and esp. the control computers behind and embedded in all those craft.

To be involved with SpaceX, designing systems and writing and testing the software and the hardware systems they control must be very exciting right now. That would be something!

Re:Super-secret Google builds servers in the dark on Thursday March 15, 2012 @08:52PM (#3711404)
Google: It's important X does not see our super secret servers, how best may we attain that, team?

Team: We suggest we co-locate with X and then turn the lights off - that way they can't see our super secret servers.

Google: Awesome idea!

Some time latter:

Co-Facility: Here come the gogglers with their head lamps, quick turn the lights off.

Co-Facility: They are gone, don't they look great with their LED lights, make a cool movie huh?

Co-Facility: Crikey, here come the X's, quick turn the lights on, oh man it's such a shame they don't have LED head lamps, they would look so cool if they did.

Re:New Paper Airplane Distance World Record on Thursday March 15, 2012 @06:37PM (#3710961)
Wow, that was pretty cool. I wonder if the climb to a stall early on in the flight is part of the typical flight profile, and if the design of the aircraft is optimized to deliver that profile. Anyone know?
And Strippers?
Re:Pinterest, We Have a Problem on Thursday March 08, 2012 @12:51AM (#3678742)
And there in lies the problem with TOS (or is the problem with the law?) if one needs to be an attorney to understand them, what hope is there for the ordinary folk - just saying. No wonder people just click through.
Re:Japanese airbag protects homes from earthquakes on Tuesday March 06, 2012 @08:35PM (#3673847)
Impressive - but I think it would be simpler to just keep the air bag inflated.
I like this advice (physical work) and its been in the back of my mind for a while as a way to take a break from the continuous onslaught of pressure to 'keep up' with developments in my craft and to give me time to consolidate what I have learnt in the last 15 year sprint.
Why does agreeing with someone get me down votes? I would have imagined no change. But to feel that strongly that ppl take the trouble to click down - why is that?
Exactly.
Re:On the Usability of Codecademy on Tuesday January 17, 2012 @05:27AM (#3474424)
That is a good idea. Maybe an animated gif - just to get the ball rolling, then use video next screen or two on.
Re:Google responds to the Mocality blog post on Friday January 13, 2012 @07:00PM (#3462977)
It seems http://www.kbo.co.ke/ is more or less free (anyone with a google account can create free sites), the only cost seems to be a domain name - follow the money.
Re:Ask HN: Does this website make sense? on Thursday January 12, 2012 @04:39AM (#3455677)
I think this is great - it kinda _why ish. I think that if it can be solved using the controls you provide that's good, but if short cuts can be made by hacking the code there is an incentive to try - like adding a loop that fires the cannon continuously, a loop that changes it angle over a range... I don't know - but if the 'cheats' are in the code there is a reason to look at it (the code). They need to be simple (initially). I quickly started adjusting the angle force in the code to just to see if I could.
Re:Raspberry Pi: We’ve started manufacture on Wednesday January 11, 2012 @03:34AM (#3450906)
All good ideas - but it ain't no batman signal.
Re: Electronic Cigarette Health Study Report on Thursday December 22, 2011 @04:52AM (#3381022)
I switched 25 years of tobacco smoking with e-cigs in several days (4 months ago) I am just now starting to enjoy the sense of smell again (oh how I love the smell of coffee). It's more expensive (for me) than smoking tobacco. I hope to drop e-cigs one day - but for now find them (or is it the nicotine) enjoyable. Stopping altogether is by far the best solution - next, I'd say are these.

For any smokers out there who have been considering trying them out I suggest you give them a go. I think you will find they press all the same buttons in a less harmful way - they replicate the sensation of the drawback.

Disclaimer: I am not associated with the any e-cig company - just a user.

Ah the mother of all code.

I've always though that was a good idea - that's why I'm teaching mine Factor.
Re:Fliers Must Turn Off Devices, but It’s Not Clear Why on Sunday November 27, 2011 @07:21PM (#3283852)
1. When so much is at stake to err on the side of caution seems reasonable. 2. I have not been in a plane for a while - so can't quite visualize what it looks like - but in the event of an emergency abort on take off, or a landing that goes wrong - having all loose items stored is a head start in ensuring ones iPad does not become an iGuillotine. Just a thought.
Re:Creativity requires isolation on Saturday November 26, 2011 @12:32AM (#3279161)
Can't help it - Kids (little grownups) can be very creative - what do they care of the science or even the process - they make it up as they go along. I think that maybe that's how some of the creative people in our times are creative. In their 'own little world' is a term often used.
Re:Creativity requires isolation on Saturday November 26, 2011 @12:20AM (#3279135)
Are you baiting? One must understand the science of creativity before they can say they have creativity-relevant skills wow fella. Did Picaso (sp?) or Bob Marley have those 'well maybe they did', they were just doing what they do - bet they studied their domain - bet they did not study the science of creativity (whatever that is - is it a science?), they just were creative people - ya either got it or ya ain't - needing to understand the science of creativity means one ain't. Oh sorry I see what u did - I don't think Amabile said you had to understand it - I think she means you have to have it - having creativity and understanding it are (I imagine) quite different. But they are just words eh? The creative among us don't care - they just do. Refactor edit.
Re:Awesome Up-And-Coming Website on Friday November 25, 2011 @12:45AM (#3276330)
That was pretty funny - my local home page is great - it got my up vote.

Re:Ask HN: What is your best concentration aid while programming? on Thursday November 24, 2011 @01:04PM (#3274979)
Same - dance, re-mixes, mashups or rock.
Re:Hackers hit US water plant on Thursday November 24, 2011 @12:43AM (#3273286)
Cheers - I must have missed that bit - sorry - motors are rated for n starts per hour - because during the start they consume or convert quite a bit more energy then steady state running and get a lot hotter - when they do get too hot the insulation on their little wires fails and they burn out - which does indeed cause a short circuit - it's just that the motors are rarely controlled by the SCADA directly and are more likely to be controlled by the water level in a tank or the pressure in a pipe (using a variable frequency drive) - the control loops are normally tight and local - SCADA's are remote and expected to fail, or go offline. But yes access to the SCADA could indeed be used to influence a motors starting and stopping - so thanks. Humm a motor starting and stopping all the time smacks of a faulty water level gauge or pressure gauge - it get's so hard to to be sure in such matters.
Re:How I Became a Programmer in ~12 Weeks on Thursday November 24, 2011 @12:23AM (#3273224)
I am so envious (when I read stuff like that) - I have been plodding along for 30 years now and am still learning how to program :(
Re:The Closed, Unfriendly World of Wikipedia on Thursday November 24, 2011 @12:14AM (#3273187)
Yeah - Both of you got my up. I too like Wikipedia - and its chock a block full of good stuff - so it seems some folk have taken the time to learn the rules and add to collective knowledge contained within.
More appropriate for Reddit - however being a Kiwi (and someone who once had a trademark problem) I find it amazing the Maori Advisory Board had no problem (I think 'shame on them') and wonder why they did not object. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koha_(custom) seems to be a common enough term.
