Re:Decoding the obfuscated bash script on a Uniqlo t-shirt on Thursday July 09, 2026 @01:56AM (#48841516)
so they presume there is bash in my system, and it is under /bin

well, i guess no peace for me then

Re:The vi family on Wednesday May 13, 2026 @05:50AM (#48119824)
well, i've got this in my muscle memory too for a reason (that linuxes tend to use vim instead of vi and enable mouse there by default):

:set mouse-=a

Yes. It would still protect you from the other strains and reduce risks of reinfection by the strains you already have, which is the main issue preventing your immune system from clearing the infection up by itself

2.6.9 is around 6yo now. I had been procrastinating for too long too, with my almost 30yo fvwm2rc, but finally migrated to x11/fvwm3 last month. Wasn’t too complicated in the end
Re:How to break free from smart TV ads and tracking on Saturday December 13, 2025 @05:45AM (#46253632)
Apple TV is a huge Apple TV+ ad in itself. I shelved my device when my 2yo had "subscribed" to Apple TV+ by just randomly clicking around
Re:Gnome is better macOS than macOS on Sunday November 23, 2025 @12:41PM (#46025519)
it’s just better "think different" than macos
Re:Unofficial Microsoft Teams Client for Linux on Saturday November 15, 2025 @03:40AM (#45935968)
I’ve been using teams for years in a browser (on my FreeBSD desktop), and I find it good enough for doing my job - chats work, calls work, presentations work, screen sharing works. or should I say mostly work… sure, it’s as glitchy as it ever was and may fail for any reason at any time, but you don’t really need an app to experience all that
It used to have a steep learning curve, I’d say. Once I’ve had a long complicated manually written configuration of all my devices, integrations, automations etc, which gradually got replaced by simple clicking in the gui. On the other hand, this also meant a lot of breaking changes over the years, when I had to re-configure my staff the new way
a lot of people do, for example me. apple maps sucks badly where i live (eu). say, it has no idea my house (built 6 years ago) exists, it builds routes via non-existing roads, is not aware of road works, detours or most of the businesses around

apple maps is completely useless here, even though i don’t like using a google app, there’s no alternative

you'd be even more impressed to find out how often polish characters (ąęłćśżźńó) get totally screwed in... poland itself
Re:Ask HN: Why can't I host my own email? on Wednesday April 27, 2022 @03:42PM (#31184804)
i can. so you can too. the hardest part is finding a clean ip in a clean block. the rest is quite simple and straightforward. dkim+spf set up was enough for my opensmtpd to deliver my mail to all the big players without any going to spam
i had been using telnet for irc in the 90s a lot, it doesn’t really require any custom client
> they literally run out of fuel on the way

surprise (not), but they literally ran out of fuel on the way [0]

that 65km convoy is just a 65km sitting duck of a traffic jam at the moment. without fuel and food

all of this war is a festival of glorious russian corruption and incompetency at its best. i, as a ukrainian, must thank them for that

HA is nice, and I've been running it on RPi for a few years, mainly to make my air purifiers work in the way I want, plus some light switches and a motion detector

The only annoying thing are random breaking changes which make me overhaul my configs a couple of times per year

Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with getting old and feeling lost? on Sunday February 06, 2022 @06:45AM (#30231663)
short answer: it will pass

longer answer: been there, seen that. carry on, find yourself a hobby and a couple of friends who share it (might require some effort, but it’s worth it). kids are also very rewarding (probably not for everyone, but surely for me), albeit very demanding too. anyway, it will pass, just dont try to drink or drug it out - that will only make things worse

good luck

Re:I Lost My Past (2017) on Saturday December 25, 2021 @07:08AM (#29682624)
heh, yeah, right, in the former ussr too there are people who fondly remember a lot of stuff their nomenclature families did have, which the other 99% didnt. and they certainly dont remember any shit the lowly plebs been through

what they are actually missing is the lost great times when they were able to feel being so high above the others

Re:A YouTube chat about chess got flagged for hate speech on Thursday July 22, 2021 @02:20AM (#27915999)
if i am writing a youtube comment and care about it, i always recheck if the comment is still there after a couple of minutes and then a couple of days. because the comments are now "disappearing" more and more frequently the last time my comment got automatically deleted right away was a couple of weeks ago for "bottle opening" words (in my language) put together. replacing a few letters in these words with different same-looking characters helped for some time, but eventually even these got deleted a few days later. i should probably give up using this last google service i still use
Kaspersky is a former KGB officer

And, as everyone in the former USSR knows, there is no such thing as a former KGB officer

when driving through poland recently, i've heard a commercial on a radio for a locally made halloumi [0] (a cyprus' protected origin cheese). they somewhat amusingly called it "haluni" [1]

so, the chinese-abibas-style is still alive and kicking even within the eu with all its "disputed systems of geographical indications"

Re:Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks on Wednesday June 23, 2021 @05:40AM (#27602584)
i’d only advice to go for the 1st edition - the second was "modifed" to fit the tsarist narratives (e.g. "russia" was added everywhere, which was obviously absent originally)

you can in firefox settings

you can also do it in chrome with the cli parameter --proxy-server

Re:On 'Biweekly' and 'Bimonthly' on Monday June 07, 2021 @03:01AM (#27419836)
Week numbering is absolutely foreign concept for most of the world

Say, I have no idea what week 26 is. I can only suggest it’s probably somewhere in [26/4]=June

I would not even know where to quickly look it up without googling - my calendars do not have this numbering

> Kyiv to Minsk

> They were only 50km from their destination country's airspace

Just in case, Kyiv is like 75km from Belarusian border

> I can speak Polish in Slovakia*, get responses in Slovak and mostly understand each other.

i'd call slovak a "middle-slavic" language, the phonetics and the lexicon makes is easy for the other slavic spekers to understand

say, i can communicate with slovaks in ukrainian and there are no significant issues with understanding too. strangely, it doesn't work for czech. at all.
